University of Warwick, United Kingdom University of Warwick Full time

Full Time, Fixed Term Contract from June 2023 - 31 March 2025

The trial will be implemented as a field experiment, a series of randomised interventions in the online shopping environment where participants do their actual grocery shopping, i.e. websites of major UK supermarkets. The interventions we will consider are eco-labels, price promotions, and swaps for healthier or more sustainable alternative products. We will explore the effects of these interventions individually and in combination with each other, and how these vary across participants with different characteristics and backgrounds. We will also compare our result to those of other trials in the SALIENT consortium in order to advise the UK government on what works, for whom, and in what circumstances.

We will work with an online survey company to recruit participants and collect background information, and we have partnered with a technology startup to develop a browser extension (plug-in) that allows us to manipulate the appearance of the grocery websites that participants use. The tasks of the postdoc include negotiations with these partners, helping to develop the study design and questionnaires, literature review, data collection and analysis, and all stages of the publication process. We expect that the results of the trial will result in several high-quality scientific publications in addition to any policy outputs.

The successful applicant will expect excellent academic mentoring by the trial leads, as well as good exposure to the academic environment in the economics department and in the public health and environmental fields. There will be opportunities to attend project workshops and academic conferences where we will present our results. They will also be encouraged to participate in departmental teaching activities and to draw on the extensive training opportunities, both internally and externally, offered by the University of Warwick.

Applicants must have completed or be close to completing a doctoral degree in economics, public health, environmental science, or other relevant field. Some familiarity with quantitative research methods (regression analysis) is required, and experience with experimental methods and/or qualitative research are welcomed. This is a strongly interdisciplinary project, and an ideal applicant would have a strong background in quantitative social science as well as a proven affinity with public health, or vice versa.

Interviews will be held via Microsoft Teams week commencing 5 June 2023.

**JOB PURPOSE**

The post-doctoral research fellow will support a field trial evaluating interventions in online grocery shopping to improve health and sustainability, led by Professors Thijs van Rens (Economics, University of Warwick) and Oyinlola Oyebode (Public Health, Queen Mary University London) and funded by the UK government through the ESRC. They will work closely with the lead investigators on the development of the study design and questionnaires, literature review, data collection and analysis, and all stages of the publication process.
