We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated practitioner to join our friendly team.

This is a temporary role, for 1 year, to cover maternity leave.

The successful applicant will have a practitioner role within the department, delivering brachytherapy, carrying out QC and generating treatment plans for prostate, cervix and skin brachytherapy.

It is a role with plenty of variety and we work together with the wider team of clinical oncologists and theatre/nursing staff to deliver world class brachytherapy.

Treatment of patients undergoing brachytherapy using the Flexitron HDR Afterloader.

QC and testing of afterloader and physics equipment/seeds/planning systems.

Generation of brachytherapy plans-for cervix, prostate (low and high dose rate), and skin.

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years. We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.

The radiotherapy physics group provides a comprehensive support service to clinical oncology including advanced radiotherapy and brachytherapy techniques such as IMRT, IGRT, VMAT, FFF, intra-cranial SRS, lung SABR, SABR CTE for oligomets, PDR and HDR brachytherapy treatments. In addition to the Withington site there are three operational radiotherapy satellite centres located in Oldham, Salford and Macclesfield.

Undertaking the physics role in theatre - set up of complex equipment, cleaning medical devices, accurate documentation, and radiation protection.

Quality Control and testing of after loader and physics equipment and radioactive sources.

Generating plans for brachytherapy-contouring organs at risk, applicator reconstruction, dose optimisation.

Treatment of patients undergoing brachytherapy using the High Dose Rate Afterloader.

Responsible for post implant dosimetry for prostate seed implants.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

General

Ensure all work complies with current UK legislation for work with ionizing radiation (IRR 2017, IR(ME)R 2017) and the Trust’s Quality System for radiotherapy.

Expected to prioritise and manage their own work on a day-to-day basis; a rota is in place for core tasks.

The place of work is normally The Christie in Withington, but the post holder may be required to carry out work at other local hospitals.

Hours are worked flexibly, in agreement with the line manager, to provide round the clock services where necessary to cover the normal range of clinical duties. Brachytherapy staff usually work within the core hours of 7:30am - 6pm Monday-Friday.

The post holder must be registered as a therapy radiographer with the Health and care professions council (HCPC) or be on the voluntary register of clinical technologists and undertake regular continuing professional development.

Be able to connect patient applicators for treatment, including moving and handling patients.

Brachytherapy

Provide information and support to patients undergoing complex brachytherapy procedures, often in the peri-operative setting who may be distressed or anxious.

Handle internal and external enquiries from other professional groups and patients.

Assist with the insertion of brachytherapy applicators and associated record keeping.

Attend multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings to discuss and review cases, offering suggestions to optimize treatment plans.

Liaise with other departments to facilitate patient pathway to include supporting patient transfers.

Programme and operate brachytherapy afterloaders delivering high doses of radiation to patients.

Carryout scheduled Quality Assurance (QA) checks, reporting errors or faults to the MPE/engineers as appropriate. Ensure correct process are followed to return equipment to clinical use.

Produce highly complex brachytherapy plans for a range of treatment sites using brachytherapy planning systems and a variety of imaging modalities (CT/MR/US).

Evaluate and check complex brachytherapy plans prior to treatment.

Undertake radiation protection duties according to department risk assessments and local rules including the safe handling and storage of radioactive sources. Liaise with the RPA (Radiation protection advisor) where appropriate.

Demonstrate the safe use of medical equipment, contributing to commissioning of new
