We are looking for a passionate and motivated Scrub Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner to join our expanding theatre service at The Christie.

The Christie offers a wide range of complex procedures, requiring advanced skills from our Multi-Disciplinary Team. We offer robust trust induction and training packages, with many development opportunities for all current staff and new starters; both newly qualified and experienced, ensuring high standards and skills are maintained throughout your time in The Christie. We offer a range of speciality roles within the department and in the organization which supports progression and development of staff. We are currently running a project to further develop and maintain staff skills by offering a rotational opportunity for our Practitioners to rotate into both Anesthetics and Scrub.

You will be a qualified nurse/ODP committed to delivering high quality care with a desire to further develop your career within this rewarding specialty. You will need to have good communication skills, be highly motivated and be able to work using your own initiative.

Post-holders will be enrolled on our orientation programme, with a designated mentor and programme tailored to your current level of experience and knowledge.

You will be required to work 37.50 hours, 4 or 5 days flexibly over 6 days (Monday to Saturday) with a commitment to out of hours on call.

Specialities covered are primarily oncology related Colorectal, Urology, Gynaecology and Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. Many surgeries taking part as a multi-speciality procedure including our leading Peritoneal Tumour Service carrying out Cytoreductive and HIPEC surgery and Total Pelvic Clearances.

We currently provide a service to both NHS patients and patients via The Christie Private Care.

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country. We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years. We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.

Education, Leadership and Clinical Practice
- To participate as a member of the Scrub team with extensive knowledge in the care of the peri-operative patient.
- To demonstrate high standards of individual patient care with a commitment to the development of evidence-based practice.
- To competently care for the peri-operative patient including the assessment, planning and evaluation of programs of care.
- Liase and integrate with the multi-disciplinary team, ensuring patients receive comprehensive care and promote a team approach to working.
- Develop good working relationships and promote effective communication between all clinical grades of staff within the multi-disciplinary team.
- Ensure proficiency with all medical equipment before use in accordance with the trust medical device policy.
- Liase with the peri-operative teams to initiate and participate in the audit and evaluation of clinical practice and surgical products in the interest of promoting quality care.
- Work with senior colleagues to formulate practice development strategies based on audit findings.
- Encourage and participate in initiatives to enhance quality care.
- The post holder will be proactive towards change and change management.
- To promote and maintain an environment conducive to professional development.
- Take responsibility for your own professional development.
- Participate in the theoretical and practical professional instruction of all learners, trained and untrained, including medical students and other allied medical professions.
- To monitor the progress of learners and in particular their skills in carrying out practical procedures.
