An exciting opportunity has arisen for a trainee SCP in the Oxford University Hospitals, John Radcliffe, Heart Centre.

Within the scope of the role, the Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP) / Surgeons assistant will be trained to deliver highly specialised intra-operative care to patients undergoing Cardiac Surgery. The SCP will communicate effectively with the patient and all members of the multidisciplinary team in the theatre environment.

To assist in the clinical management of a patient’s preparation for theatre to include, assisting in the planning of surgery, preparation of the required equipment and documentation.

The post holder will work as a member of the cardiac surgical team. The trainee Surgical Care Practitioner will practice under the supervision or direction of the Consultant Surgeon and a Surgical Care Practitioner mentor whilst undertaking and following the national curriculum framework.

To practice under the supervision or direction of the Consultant Surgeon/Visiting Surgeon during an operation as requested and to provide expert clinical knowledge and support to both the surgeon and the theatre users.

A formal training programme at master’s level in the university which is based on the syllabus recommended by the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland will be followed. This programme will be completed with the Royal College of Surgeons’ examination at the appropriate time.

The Trust comprises four hospitals - the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington and the Horton General Hospital in Banbury.

S/he will be expected to maintain a high level of skill and professionalism and provide portfolio evidence of continuing professional development.

To work as part of the multi-disciplinary team to co-ordinate the care and treatment of cardiac surgical patients and their families. They will also act as a resource to nurses, doctors and other health care professionals caring for patients with these conditions.

The post-holder will work across care group and primary / secondary care boundaries to ensure a seamless service from diagnosis onwards.
