**Job summary**:

- This position is based at London, National**Job description**:
The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) is an executive non-departmental public body of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Driven by government’s aim for clean, healthy, safe, productive and biologically diverse oceans and seas, MMO’s purpose is to protect and enhance our precious marine environment, and support UK economic growth by enabling sustainable marine activities and development.

We are the independent regulator for England’s seas, professionally delivering service-focussed outcomes for our customers.

We are a team of around 400 people and combine our Newcastle upon Tyne and London operations with a local presence around the English coastline in Brixham, Beverley, Harwich, Hastings, Lowestoft, North Shields, Hayle, Plymouth, Poole, Portsmouth, Preston, Scarborough, Shoreham, Whitehaven.

We also have colleagues based in Defra offices, including Bristol, Cambridge and York where we share office space.

The Future Fisheries Team is a small team with a wide and interesting range of work. We are responsible for working on future fisheries legislation, policy, and technology development, and consequently our work frequently changes. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a team with an important role in shaping the future of fisheries in the UK and Overseas Territories.

Our work often overlaps with that of other teams within MMO, for example, supporting/drafting certain dispensations to vessels taking part in trials, developing monitoring plans for overseas territories or gathering data for use by control and enforcement teams. We also work closely with other Government agencies such as Defra and Cefas, providing information that feeds into the development of policy on fishing.

Job description

The job holder will be engaged with the teams work to develop the implementation of REM (Remote Electronic Monitoring) technology as a tool for use in monitoring fishing activity. This is both in support of the development of policy on the delivery of REM and, over time, in practical terms, overseeing the fitting of equipment, carrying out video review of fishing activity, and monitoring data outputs from fishing vessels taking part in trials.
In addition, with support from the team, this role will contribute to providing advice to policy teams and drafting guidance to MMO staff and stakeholders on future legislation such as the Landing Obligation (discard ban) for instance, compiling reports in relation to fishing activity and catch data.

You will be providing support to the HEO (Higher Executive Officer) and the Future Fisheries team, and in addition, sometimes you will be providing EO support to neighbouring MMO teams, specifically the Fisheries Management team within our directorate.

This is an interesting and stretching role which would suit someone wanting to help shape future REM policies and assist in monitoring the results, with good communications skills and who enjoys problem-solving and varied work.

Successful applicants will receive suitable training to carry out this role as well as training on fisheries and relevant legislation.
