**Job summary**:
Dstl’s **CBR (Chemical, Biological and Radiation) Division** provides innovative, cutting edge scientific services and research in Chemistry, Biology, Radiation, Medical and Human Sciences. This Division supports the whole of UK Defence and Security including the recent Novichok incidents in Salisbury and the UK’s COVID-19 response.

CBR’s operations are highly regulated and must comply with a broad range of legislative, regulatory and organisational policy requirements, primarily for the purposes of safety and quality.

We are seeking a **Lead Document Controller** to provide critical support to enable the successful delivery of CBR’s mission.

**Job description**:
**In this role you will**:

- Be responsible for the management and control of critical documents, including Standard Operating Procedures and operational licences, ensuring their effective through life control from initial production, to periodic review and final retiring and archiving.
- Be responsible for the management and continual improvement of the document control system, including the relevant processes and tools, and ensuring that it remains fit for purpose and in line with the Division’s business and operational needs.
- Ensure the archiving of relevant research output.
- Be responsible for the leadership and oversight of the Deputy Document Controllers.
- Help champion and promote the quality of written documentation.
- Provide training in the relevant document control processes where necessary and be the main focal point for document control within the Division.
- Be responsible for reporting on the overall status of document control and any accompanying risks and issues to Division Managers.

**Person specification**:
**We are looking for someone who has**:

- A good understanding of the importance of the document control life cycle and how it’s a critical enabler to successful business operations.
- Experience in developing, implementing and maintaining systems that provide for effective control of critical documents eg: Standard Operating Procedures, operational licences
- Experience of working within a life science and/or regulated environment
- Management, leadership or supervisory experience

**Job Dimensions**
The role is focussed on the provision of document control as a service and involves providing leadership to up to three Deputy Document Controllers but does not involve direct line management or budgetary responsibilities.

**Qualifications**

**Essential**
- Evidence of good standard of general education (e.g. GCSEs or equivalent including English and Mathematics at Grade C or above).

**Desirable**
- Evidence of higher education (A-Level/NVQ or University Degree).

**Skills**

**Essential**
- Competence in using Microsoft Office software products, specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
- Excellent organisational skills
- An exceptional eye for detail and the ability to work systematically

**Desirable**
- Customer service skills
- Competence in the use of electronic document management tools.

**Important Information***

This role will require full UK security clearance and you should have resided in the UK for the past 5 years. For some roles Developed Vetting will also be required, in this case you should have resided in the UK for the past 10 years.
