We are seeking a junior clinical fellow (ST1-2 equivalent) to join our Neurosurgery department, based at the Royal Preston Hospital. This is a 12 month fixed term post.
The post holder will partake in the junior tier on-call rota and will work clinically, this includes day to day pre and post operative care of patients, working on the ward, examining and clerking all patients admitted and arranging any relevant investigations. The post holder will also attend outpatient clinics, participate in audit and teaching activities within the unit.

We pride ourselves on supporting out junior doctors and this post will provide opportunities for research and we encourage all our staff to participate in teaching and training at both undergraduate and post graduate levels.

You will partake in the junior tier on-call for the Neurosurgery Department during which time you will discharge clinical duties as required and set out in the job description.

The Neurosurgery Department is based at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust The Unit provides a service to Lancashire and Cumbria containing the health districts of Preston, Chorley and South Ribble, Blackpool, Blackburn, Burnley, Lancaster and Barrow. The estimated catchment population served is approximately 1.5 million generating an annual activity level of approximately 1,900 elective in-patients and 3,850 new outpatients.

The Unit consists of 64 acute beds based primarily on three wards. This is a busy unit provides the full range of neurosurgical services. There are sub speciality interests in Neuro-oncology, Vascular, Spine, Pain / Hydrocephalus, Pituitary, Skull-base along with a large general neurosurgical turnover. Speciality clinics and Multi-disciplinary team meetings are held on-site. A Paediatric Neurosurgery clinic is held on-site though in-patient services are provided at Manchester. There is an established Stereotactic Radio-surgery service in association with Oncology.

There are four complex spine surgeons within the neurosurgeons. Between them, they cover the entire gamut of adult spinal surgery. Minimally Invasive surgery, use of spinal navigation, spinal tumours, degenerative scoliosis are some of the areas covered on a regular basis. Routine spinal procedures are carried out by all the neurosurgeons.
