Oxford, United Kingdom Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Oxford University Hospitals Foundation Trust is looking for enthusiastic and caring staff to deliver a positive patient experience, and excellent customer service to participants in its new Oxfordshire Targeted Lung Health Check (TLHC) service. This service is the local provider of a new national programme tackling lung cancer and health inequality. Our target is to prevent 500 lung cancer deaths in Oxfordshire within the next few years.

Your work will be interesting and varied as it will include both patient facing and back-room work. You will have the choice of working from various locations (office, home and a mobile van designed to make this service easily accessible). You will be able to work flexible hours including optional twilight and weekend shifts. Training will be provided as needed. If you have a keen eye for detail, good organisational skills, a commitment to high quality patient care and a positive attitude, we would love to hear from you.

The Lung Health Check Service is an exciting new service enabling early detection of lung cancer whilst it can still be easily and curatively treated. Many people are not aware that this is possible so but it can transform the five year survival rate after diagnosis from about 15% to above 80%. Everyone registered with an Oxfordshire GP between the age of 55 and 74 with a smoking history will be invited to have a lung health check. This will be a three stage process. Their eligibility for the TLHC service will be checked, usually by phone. Eligible participants will be invited to attend a face-to-face consultation with a nurse, usually on our new mobile CT scanner/consultation unit. You will be involved at all stages.from initial contact and risk assessment, through to welcoming them face to face and offering smoking cessation support if needed, and then ensuring that recommended follow-up actions are promptly delivered. You will have an interesting and rewarding multi-purpose role within a team of 15-20 people delivering this service, with well-supported training and development opportunities.

Engaging with a TLHC evidences participant awareness that their lungs may have been damaged by smoking. For current smokers this is an ideal opportunity to “make Every Contact Count” and encourage health promotion, including smoking cessation. Quit rates from attendees are much higher than usual, and encouraging smoking cessation will be an important part of the service.
