An exciting and newly created opportunity has become available for a Head of Waste Strategy to join our Finance and Regulation department. This unique role will see you have a significant impact on the overall strategy for Wessex Water.

**The opportunity**

In this position, you will lead the development of Wessex Water’s waste strategy, including our Drainage and Wastewater Management Plan (DWMP), Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP), bioresources and long-term delivery strategy.

This role is crucial to the company’s ability to establish its medium and long-term plans in a highly challenging sector. You will be working collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders and working with cross-functional teams in the development of company-wide operational strategies.

This is a hands-on position, where you will be supervising a team of circa 10 in-house specialists and instructing external consultant support.

Further responsibilities will include:

- helping to rebuild public trust in the sector by understanding the needs of customers, communities and the environment, and articulating a clear strategy with tangible outcomes
- influencing our 25-year company-wide strategic direction and business planning process
- analysis and vision to deliver a strategy that meets legislative and regulatory requirements while delivering customer and environmental needs and investor returns
- providing visible leadership internally and externally, including across the UK water sector
- collaboration with all areas of the business to define strategy in partnership with stakeholders
- horizon scanning, understanding technological innovations and keeping ahead of the market
- bringing a structured and analytical approach to solving strategic, commercial, operational, and health and safety issues
- contributing to a developing culture within the strategy team to achieve high levels of strategic thinking and cross-company collaboration
- influencing sector and government policy.

**What do I need?**

To be considered for this opportunity, you will be degree qualified or equivalent and have seven plus years’ experience in the water and waste businesses (preferably operational or engineering but this is not essential) and/or strategy (consultancy or corporate).

Alongside this, you have a high level of strategic thinking, vision and horizon scanning, as well as a strong understanding of bioresources legislation, policy and practice.

Additional requirements include:

- good knowledge of water and environmental law
- desire to investigate, analyse and innovate
- excellent two-way dialogue with cross-functional teams
- proven experience developing creative solutions for difficult problems
- excellent time management skills
- flexible, adaptable and able to work under pressure
- exceptionally good analytical skills
- the ability to translate raw information into actionable strategies and initiatives
- the ability to shape a narrative and structure communications
- proven strong leadership skills.
