The Senior Matron will provide professional support and leadership to the ED matron and Urgent Care lead nurse. They provide support to a large team of band 7 nurses/AHP’s to lead our department. The Consultant Nurse, who is a dual RCEM adult/paediatric credentialed ACP was appointed in 2021. This role has strategic responsibilities for developing clinical practice, advanced practice, education, quality and research. We have an expanding team of Advanced Clinical Practitioners, who work in all areas of the adult and children’s ED.

This role will be key to deliver compassionate leadership in relationship to professional nursing issues, nursing care and quality standards within the Emergency Department (ED). The senior matron for the Emergency Department will provide professional leadership to the nursing workforce within the Emergency Department and Urgent Care Centre. They shall work closely with the department teams to ensure that the departments are supporting the Trust in its vision to: be the employer of choice, deliver better care at lower cost and to deliver high-quality, patient centred care. The senior matron will be a key member of the ED triumvirate, working closely with the ED Consultant Nurse and act as a link between the ED and the wider organisation. The senior matron will lead on the development of new services and patient care pathways to ensure that they match the needs of patients and the local and national health economy. Strong links will be made with the wider division and the senior matron will work with the ED senior leadership to ensure operational performance is maintained and to develop strategies to improve performance and quality of care. The post holder will develop and be responsible for local workforce, education and quality plans, in conjunction with the Consultant Nurse. The senior matron shall act as a role model and mentor to staff and will deputise for the Divisional Director of Nursing as required.
