Epsom and St Helier Hospitals NHS Trust has an exciting opportunity for an Anatomical Pathology Assistant to join the mortuary at Epsom General Hospital, with the possibility of working at St Helier Hospital, Carshalton when required.

Full mortuary services are provided on both Epsom and St Helier sites, with the autopsy service being provided at St Helier Hospital.

Applications are invited for the post of Anatomical Pathology Assistant. We are looking for an individual to join our motivated and enthusiastic team that will contribute to upholding and improving upon our quality service. The applicant must be able to work as part of a team or alone. The applicant must have excellent communication skills and display meticulous attention to detail with the ability to recall complex information and be willing to participate in all activities related to the mortuary.

**Main duties of the job**:
The duties are physically and mentally demanding with some aspects of the role requiring participation in the departmental quality management system. Physical aspects require moving and handling of patients, family viewings and, on occasion, preparation of the deceased for autopsy examination. An essential quality is an empathic approach towards the bereaved.

There may be the opportunity to take part in the on-call rota to cover periods of annual leave and sickness.

The Trust's two district general hospitals, Epsom General Hospital and St Helier Hospital, both offer an extensive range of acute services including 24-hour A&E. Epsom General Hospital is situated close to the centre of Epsom, whilst St Helier Hospital, which also incorporates Queen Mary’s Hospital for Children on site, is situated in Carshalton.

The Trust provides services to local communities including the whole of the London Borough of Sutton and part of the London Borough of Merton; the Surrey Boroughs of Epsom and Ewell, Reigate and Banstead and Elmbridge, plus part of the District Council of Mole Valley.

Within this main area the Trust serves approximately 510,000 people. It also provides medical care for a wider population, particularly for certain specialist services. The Trust includes the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and a dedicated Children’s Hospital with an accredited Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The mortuary provides an autopsy service at St Helier to the local Coroner and Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust Hospitals handling 360 Coroners and the occasional hospital autopsy.

**Detailed job description and main responsibilities**:
The post holder is directly responsible to the Mortuary Manager,Operations Manager and the Consultant Pathologist and gives support to all users of the mortuary service.

The post holder is required to provide an efficient mortuary service with the available resources. The mortuary service affects many people across the NHS and in the community. The post holder liaises with medical staff, nursing staff, laboratory staff, portering staff and the chaplaincy, as well as those involved with H. M. Coroners and their representatives, police, forensic service in order to proved the best possible care for the deceased. There is also a need to communicate with relatives or indeed people who may be thinking of having a post-mortem in the event of their death.

The post holder contributes to the maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) within the mortuary, ensuring all aspects of Health and Safety and Quality within the mortuary are adhered to, and keeps accurate records - ensuring all records are up to date.
