**An exciting opportunity has arisen to work as a Support worker within the Lung Cancer Nurse Specialist (LCNS) team. This is a new post and you will be working with, and supported by an established large LCNS team and admin co-ordinator. You will also work closely with a dedicated lung cancer MDT or ’team lung' as we like to call them.**

**We are looking for a kind, dedicated team player with excellent communication skills and an interest in cancer to join our warm team. You would need to embrace change and enjoy service development.**

**The LCNS cover a large cancer pathway providing advice, social and emotional support and information to patients and their loved ones throughout their pathway. We meet patients from pre-diagnosis, diagnosis, treatment and palliative care. Your work will cover clinics, wards and telephone consultations Monday to Friday, supporting the LCNS and proactively managing the electronic Holistic Needs assessment (eHNA) nurse led clinics.**

**We provide a one month supernumerary induction along with lots of continuous education once in post and there is an opportunity to attend a lung cancer conference each year with Lung Cancer Nursing UK (LCNUK). You will also be part of a wider network of LCNS throughout the East Midlands allowing for shared experiences and best practice.**

**If you have experience working in Respiratory Medicine, Oncology, Palliative Care, Thoracic surgery or community this would be a great new opportunity for you.**

Main duties of the job

The working week for an LCNS includes two MDTs. You will be expected to support the LCNS in identifying patients who need an eHNA. The goal is to get patients to their treatment quickly in line with the National Optimal Lung Cancer Pathway (NOLCP) whilst being cared for holistically. Following on from this it is to support patients undergoing treatment and palliative care.

You will undertake electronic holistic needs assessments (eHNAs ) and will follow patients concerns up whilst working closely with the LCNS.

The LCNS address prehabilitation for patients at set intervals to optimise their tolerance to treatment and improve their ability to live well with and beyond cancer. This covers physical activity, nutrition, smoking cessation and psychological wellbeing. You will help facilitate this part of the service.

You will be allocated the incoming patient phone each day at set intervals.

You will visit patients with lung cancer where ever they are placed throughout city hospital depending on their needs.

You will require excellent communication skills, empathy and kindness with good IT skills. You will need to be organised and able to work autonomously and forward thinking.

Working for our organisation

The Lung cancer nurse specialist (LCNS) team are made up of eleven nurses (7.8 whole time equivalent). The team are all band 6 except the two managers who job share at band 7 and admin support at band 3.

We are part of a wider MDT working closely with consultants, nurses and admin form different directorates but that make up the whole lung cancer team. The LCNS and the support worker will cover the whole pathway working wherever the patient needs us. Lung cancer patient’s journey can be fluid, and the patients can move back and forth between specialities often due to additional co morbidities, therefor communication and documentation needs to be excellent as the LCNS and the support worker are the only people seeing them through the whole patient journey.

The team is warm and friendly and the team care about one another which is particularly important in a job that can be emotionally difficult given the nature of the disease. There is no hierarchy within our team, we are one team who hold the patient at the heart of all we do.

Working in lung cancer can be complex and the team are diligent and dedicated. We are based at city hospital which is often described as a lovely place to work.
