Whittington Health's Self-Management Service and the City & Hackney stop smoking service support people to improve their health through changing their behaviour. The services are well-established and are well-loved by service users, commissioners and the local community.

We are looking for someone to provide strategic leadership for the two services. The post holder will be expected to manage the contracts and any sub-contracts, manage the budgets and support the team and the various partners to achieve the contract targets. Each service employs a service manager who handles the day-to-day management of the service and supports the lead, where possible.

This postholder provides operational management and strategic leadership for two Adult Community services, the Self-Management & Behaviour Change Service and the stop smoking service.

The Self-Management & Behaviour Change Service is funded by the London Boroughs of Islington and Haringey to run the Expert Patient Programme and several locally-designed self-management programmes plus delivering training to Haringey and Islington professionals (the Advanced Development Programme)

LB Hackney and the Corporation of London fund the City and Hackney stop smoking service (Smokefree City & Hackney). Whittington Health is the lead provider for this contract, which includes running clinics, promoting the service and providing stop smoking training.

The post holder will be the main point of contact with commissioners, ensuring that both services meet their contractual targets. Should the possibility of tendering for a new contract arise, the post holder - with support from the Contracts Lead - will lead for the service/s on the bid-writing.

1. Leadership and staff management

Provide leadership and line management to the staff in the Self-management & Behaviour Change Service and the stop smoking service. This will include monitoring staff performance, mandatory training, sickness, appraisals and professional development;
- Ensure that both teams have clear aims and objectives and are functioning in a way that operates within their allocated resources;
- Ensure that there are clear and effective supervision and management structures in place for both services, and that these operate effectively;
- Ensure all key organisational messages and requirements are cascaded to both services and acted on as appropriate;
- To develop and/or reconfigure services as required to meet objectives.

1. Managing the Self-Management & Behaviour Change Service
- Lead and manage the Whittington Health Expert Patients Programme, Self management programme for people with type 2 diabetes, and Advanced Development Programme for health and care professionals;
- Co-ordinate the support given to people with long-term conditions to self manage within Whittington Health and contribute to a coherent response from all stakeholders in primary care, community, secondary care and across social services and the third sector;
- Contribute to maintaining Whittington Health’s position as leaders in this field, locally and nationally, building on the legacy of work undertaken with The Health Foundation;
- Promote the service and an understanding of the importance of self-management to Whittington Health services, the ICB, third sector organisations and the broader health and social care community;
- Encourage staff in the service to promote their achievements by writing up their work and present at local, regional and national events;
- Contribute to and coordinate relevant quality improvement initiatives throughout Whittington Health relating to broader elements of behaviour change and person-centred care;
- Provide leadership to clinical and non-clinical Whittington Health staff in developing and improving health promotion within their service and help them to integrate self-management into their work practices;
- Provide expertise and advice to Whittington Health staff through effective coaching and facilitation.
