We are an international music centre based on the banks of the River Tyne. We are a unique venue where artists from across the world perform and audiences from a wide range of backgrounds come to hear, make, and enjoy all types of music.
We support local people to be creative, to develop a passion for music and put music at the heart of communities. Our artist development programme provides local artists with the opportunities they need to develop a career in music. We support young people to make music in our building and in the wider community through programmes such as In Harmony Newcastle Gateshead.

**About you**
Are you self-motivated, happy working in a team environment and flexible enough to adapt to a changing environment? If this sounds like you, here are some specific types of experience that will help you hit the ground running.
**You must have proven experience of**:
- Teaching and leading music language learning activities using a wide range of approaches and pedagogies
- Developing and implementing inclusive music practices and pedagogy
- Teaching with the focus on achieving personal, social, and musical outcomes.
- Working with children and their families from a wide range of backgrounds, including those with Special Educations Need and /or Disabilities.
- Writing music language curricula and creating music resources to support activities
- Monitoring and evaluation of students’ progress
**Proven knowledge or understanding of**:
- Music education and musical and social pedagogies
- Social and personal reasons why people experience barriers to learning.
- Different ways of teaching and leading music within both individuals and group settings
- Skills and confidence in communicating with people from different backgrounds.
- Current policy and plans related to musical inclusion, and music education.
- Excellent organisational skills, including:
- Excellent written communication skills
- Commitment to teamwork and collaboration.
**It also helps if you have**:
- Experience of teaching through online platforms
- Diverse musical styles, e.g., folk or jazz
- Knowledge of the National Curriculum for Music in Primary Schools
- Familiarity with a variety of exam boards
**About the role of **Step Up Strand Leader, Music Language **at** **The Glasshouse**
**Make Music** is the name for all of The Glasshouse’s music making classes, groups, ensembles, and activities for schools and music educators. People of all ages, experience levels and backgrounds sing, play, and create with us. Whether starting from scratch or polishing some skills there’s a class, choir, band, or studio to suit everyone.
**Make Music: Adults** **and** **Families **fun, informal classes, and groups suitable for people of all abilities - including those who like a bit of a challenge. Daytime and evening classes to enjoy at The Glasshouse or online at home.
**Make Music: Young People** supports any young person aged 4 to 25 find their voice, learn a musical instrument, write, and produce their own songs, meet others to play and sing with, build their confidence, and take part in exciting performances.
The Glasshouse runs a leading musical training that supports young musicians aged 4 - 19 to develop the skills and confidence to reach their musical potential. We encourage applicants from the most diverse backgrounds, making sure that everyone has the chance to study with us. Financial support is available through grants and bursaries.
**Make Music: Schools **activities and events invite school groups into the building to experience exhilarating live music. In Big Sing and Big Sing for Mini Singers children aged 5-11 learn new songs and sing with a live band along with hundreds of other children their age. School groups are also welcome to explore our fantastic building and watch our Royal Northern Sinfonia rehearse.
The Glasshouse understands that people learn in different ways and have different musical interests. We have come up with ways of teaching music that support people’s personal development as well as musical, designed around the needs of the person learning. We have written this down in our Inclusive Music Making Guide and everything we do is based on that.
Through all this we connect young people with visiting artists, and we work with Music Hubs and other partners to support young people to grow in the North East
