The Role
The School of Natural and Environmental Sciences is seeking a Bee Research Assistant within the Modelling Evidence and Policy Research Group.
The postholder will work on a short 3 month collaborative project with partners from across the beekeeping community to improve our understanding of the control of chronic bee paralysis (CBP), an emerging disease of honey bees.

Key Accountabilities
Reporting to the PI - Professor Giles Budge
Conduct transmission and pathogenesis studies in adult honey bees after challenge with virus
Use data from to create biostatistical models in programming language R to understand infection risk
Conduct field trials to gather new data on intervention success
Work independently, using problem solving skills to develop the project whilst remaining cognisant of novel strategies and opportunities for exploitation
Interact with policy and other actors form the beekeeping sector to help prepare a management plan for chronic bee paralysis
The Person
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Proven ability to work successfully in a research team
Theoretical understanding of honey bee biology and experience of handling live insects
Personal skills necessary to interact with others
Practical experience of molecular techniques e.g. qRT-PCR
A full and clean driving licence would be useful for field work
Training in practical beekeeping would be an advantage
Experience of handling live insects
Experience of biological modelling
Experience of working with infective agents such as viruses, fungi or bacteria
Ability to analyse data in R environment
Attributes and Behaviour
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Ability to work and communicate cross-culturally in an international team
Ability to work under own supervision, sometimes in remote environments, as well as part of a team
The successful applicant will need to work with adult worker honeybees and so the post is not suitable for those with a known allergy to bee stings or a phobia about working with live insects
**Qualifications**:
Degree in Biology, Zoology (Essential)
