**We are looking for Waste Operatives at Southampton General Hospital.**

The University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust provides services to 1.9 million people living in Southampton and south Hampshire, while also providing specialist services such as neurosciences, cardiac services, and children's intensive care to the wider area.

The Trust is made up of 6 locations with Southampton General Hospital being the largest, running specialist services, emergency, and critical care along with outpatient clinics, diagnostic and treatment work, surgery, research, education and training. This is a large and busy site.

We have temporary placements available for **Waste Operatives **at Southampton General Hospital (Tremona Road, Southampton, SO16 6YD) starting ASAP. There is possibility and option for this placement to turn permanent.
- **If you’re not already on the bank you will need to be able to provide a reference covering a 6-month period of employment within the last 3 years**_.

This is a physically demanding role, where you will be involved in moving waste around the outside of the Southampton General Hospital site. You will be on your feet, walking for the majority of the 7.5-hour shift, working outside for the majority of the shift. You will have a 30-minute lunch break.

You will be moving large wheelie bins across the site, collecting waste from different areas of the hospital and bringing them to a central point, where they are emptied into waste contains ready for collection from the site.

The working hours are commonly 12:00 - 20:00 Monday to Friday and you get to direct book the shifts that work for you. There is weekend availability and earlier shifts.

The pay rate is £10.19 per hour plus you accrue holiday pay on top and higher rates for weekend shifts.

The training for this role is on the job and you have a paid trial shift to ensure the role is for you.

The duties will include:

- Ensure all waste types are collected from the sluice room or holding room from each level as per the schedule you are assigned to
- To follow the waste policies ensuring the waste groups should never be mixed
- To ensure all waste is disposed of in the appropriate containers
- To follow the departmental security procedures by ensuring clinical waste bin must be kept locked with keys always provided
- To ensure the department is maintaining a clean, tidy and safe working environment
- When required, lock the waste department/compounds at the end of their shift and return the bleep to secure
- To maintain good working relationships and communication with general politeness and courtesy with both colleagues and other departments
- To undertake other waste compound duties which includes the emptying of the domestic waste bins into the compactor and supplying the waste operative with empty bins
- To undertake any ad-hoc duties as and when required

They are looking for someone who:

- Ideally has Waste Operative experience however training is provided
- Has strong communication skills and is a strong team player
- Has the ability to deal with physical aspects of the role
- Professional and approachable person
- Works well in a busy and demanding environment
