**Job summary**:
Making sure that the products we buy and use get disposed of responsibly and, wherever possible, get turned back into useful materials and products again, is at the heart of what we do in the resources and waste policy teams in Defra. Packaging, in particular, is something that touches all our daily lives - it protects the food we eat, allows the products we buy to reach us safely and ensures that perishable goods have a long shelf-life.

With the increasing awareness of the impacts that plastics and other packaging waste products can have when they end up in our open environment, we are working to ensure products and packaging systems are designed in a way which ensure the product can be produced, distributed, used and recovered with minimum environmental impact and at lowest social and economic cost.

The UK government committed, in its 25 Year Environment Plan, to reform producer responsibility systems to incentivise producers to take greater responsibility for the environmental impacts of their products. This includes the introduction of a Deposit Return Scheme for drinks containers.

In the Deposit Return Scheme team, we are developing the framework to require industry to rollout DRS in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The team are currently finalising a consultation response, developing secondary legislation and preparing for engagement with stakeholders as they ramp up towards delivery.

This an exciting and challenging time to join a passionate, dedicated team to help us with initiatives to increase recycling, and incentivise producers to take more responsibility for the products they make.

It’s a friendly, fun, collaborative place to work, where we attach importance to how we do things - values, learning and development, rewarding success - as well as what we do. It is demanding but exciting and exhilarating, too.

**Job description**:
We are looking for an SEO Project Support Officer to ensure effective project management for the Deposit Return Scheme team which could include the following key areas:

- Management of the DRS project plan including our plan on a page and Microsoft project - putting in place processes to track against the plan, working with the team to update the plan and escalate any potential delays against key milestones.
- Management of the DRS team RAID log including supporting active management of risks and issues (including ensuring suitable mitigation is in place) within the team.
- Supporting the DRS project board and our input to the wider programme board - including coordinating and drafting board material and identifying areas for escalation.
- Tracking delivery of milestones required for each of our assurance gates as we work through the phases of the project. Engaging with assurance reviews and supporting action on recommendations, organising assurance processes such as gateway reviews when required.
- Responding to other commissions and working closely with the wider programme team to maintain a standardised approach to programme delivery.
- Ensuring effective change management processes are in place to agree and document changes.
