**Job summary**:
This is an exciting opportunity to join the UK Health Security Agency’s Private Office Group.

The Senior Private Secretary is responsible for leading, motivating, and developing the Private Office to provide effective support to the principal. They play a key role in helping to advise the principal and ensure their priorities are delivered.

They will undertake the day-to-day management of the team as well as supporting the process of policy development, working with Ministers, and engaging the senior UKHSA team and colleagues across the organisation on matters of importance to their business area. They will need to build a comprehensive understanding of their principal’s responsibilities and be trusted to act independently to add value.

We are currently recruiting for multiple roles, including Senior Private Secretary to the Chief Executive, Professor Dame Jenny Harries, as well as Technology and Commercial teams.

**Your key responsibilities will include**:

- Oversee a high-quality service for the principal, personally delivering key priorities and communicating those effectively to teams.
- Develop an understanding of the policy and operational areas within their remit and develop strong working relationships with the teams working on these issues, helping them to interact successfully with the principal.
- Take a key role in driving portfolio work and, ensuring coherence across the senior leadership team, business areas, customers, and stakeholders.
- Build and maintaining strong relationships with the executive leadership of UKHSA and their Private Offices to collectively drive forward work, understand risks and help operational delivery.
- Develop a team culture and environment of continuous improvement that supports the wider organisation to deliver.

**Detailed job description and main responsibilities**

***The Senior Private Secretary is responsible for leading, motivating, and developing the Private Office to provide effective support to the principal. You will play a key role in helping to advise the principal and ensure their priorities are delivered.

They will undertake the day-to-day management of the team as well as supporting the process of policy development, working with Ministers, and engaging the senior UKHSA team and colleagues across the organisation on matters of importance to their business area. They will need to build a comprehensive understanding of their principal’s responsibilities and be trusted to act independently to add value.

As part of the SLT, the Senior Private Secretary will also contribute to the leadership of wider Private Office Group. As part of this they will be expected to support one of the corporate workstreams aimed at making Private Office Group an excellent place to work, such as improving learning and development or tackling bullying, harassment, and discrimination.

**Essential criteria**
- The ability to work at pace on a range of competing priorities, whilst remaining calm under pressure and demonstrating resilience. The ability to work flexibly and quickly develop expertise on new policy areas and exercise judgement often working with incomplete or inconclusive information and data.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and motivate people at all levels, building trust with stakeholders to achieve goals.
- A proven commitment to promoting and driving an inclusive workplace culture in your teams and beyond.
- A proven track record of making a strong personal impact, demonstrating effectiveness and credibility to operate at a senior level.

**Desirable criteria**
- Previous experience of working in Private Office.
- Previous experience of working in public health or another healthcare-related area.
