**About the Role**

We’re looking for a skilled Life Underwriter to join our fantastic Claims team. You’ll become an integral member of the team, and will work to underwrite claims in a compliant matter, utilising controls to ensure claims are paid to legitimate claimants under LV=’s Protection products.

**About You**
- Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal
- Be able to work in a fast-paced, changing environment, while maintaining a high degree of accuracy and meeting tight deadlines
- Demonstrate great administration skills, with the ability to manage, plan, organise, and prioritise your own workload and adapt to customer needs
- Competently work solo on complex cases, while also helping your team deliver on key targets
- Proactively consider the evolving needs of the business, and our changing industry, and make any suggestions for improvements
- Make pragmatic decisions and judgements on cases, in line with regulatory requirements and the LV= values
- Be numerical and literate, with a real eye for detail
- Have strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
- Exhibit knowledge of LV= Protection products (desirable)
- Be experienced with working within a similar claims environment.

**Key Responsibilities**
- Assessing Life and Disability claims, in accordance with procedures, to determine the level of benefit to be paid
- Instructing and reviewing specialist reports when required, to obtain evidence needed to fully assess a claim, and therefore reaching the correct decision and outcome
- Ensuring all claim decisions can be easily explained and justified if required
- Authorising payment of approved claims, ex-gratia payments, and payments on accounts (in accordance with specified departmental limits)
- Complying with regulatory and statutory standards and controls, both auditory and departmental
- Maintaining up-to-date medical knowledge to carry out the correct underwriting of claims
- Authorising income protection and critical illness payments where appropriate
- Assessing and managing claims with special regards to policy conditions, medical, financial and occupational evidence, authorising claim visits and the use of private investigators where appropriate
- Assisting with departmental procedure improvements
- Helping to train and quality-check the work of less experienced underwriters and clerical staff
- Corresponding clearly with internal and external customers, and service providers
- Undertaking project or research work to assist the team where required
- Supporting resourcing in the Health Claims department, ensuring that customer service standards for IFAs and policy holders are met
- Adhering to compliance with regulatory and statutory standards and controls, both auditory and departmental
- Monitoring and controlling workflow to the claims underwriting unit
- To advise Customer Service Team Manager of claim trends and assist in determining improved departmental procedures.
