ROLE PURPOSE

The UCLH Play and Youth Services Team provide therapeutic, diagnostic, developmental and specialised play interventions to help support children and young people during their time at UCLH. Play is an essential part of childhood and adolescence, as well as being essential for children’s and young people’s mental, social and emotional growth and well-being. This does not stop when they come to UCLH. The Play and Youth services team facilitates play throughout the various hospital settings and clinics ensuring the children’s and young people’s needs are met. Their work includes:

- Providing age and developmentally appropriate information through play preparation for potentially frightening and/or painful treatment.
- Supporting our patients during invasive procedures by providing distraction therapy.
- Being an advocate on behalf of the children and young people.
- Providing peer group support.
- Providing parental, sibling and extended family support.
- Providing therapeutic interventions to support patients throughout their hospital journey.
- Creating safe, welcoming, and less frightening environments to paediatric and young person patients.
- Providing a wide variety of play interventions and recreation to our paediatric and young person patients.
- Teaching our peers and colleagues on appropriate play, communication and approaches for sick and injured children and young person.
- Working cohesively with members of the nursing, medical and other staff groups, to provide family centred care

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Reporting to the HPS/ Ward Sister/ Nurse in Charge on arrival
- Encouraging patients to interact/take part in activities
- Helping to supervise activities in the Playroom/Rec Room such as arts and crafts and table football.
- Involvement with organised, ward-based group activities such as Breakfast Club and pizza or movie night.
- Interacting with patients by their bed or cubicle (at special request).
- Keeping the Playroom safe and tidy and cleaning of play equipment as part of infection control
- Assisting the Play Specialist (HPS) with any duties that helps to maintain an appealing and inviting recreational area.
- Helping with preparation of activities, for example, cutting out activities.
- Helping with display boards, i.e. putting up backing paper and laminating patient’s pictures for display
- Responding to patient enquiries and referring to appropriate members of staff where further help is required
- Complete volunteer sign in and activity sheets to record activities

Boundaries of the role
- Volunteers are not involved in any clinical duties or the manual handling of patients
- Volunteers must not provide any assisted feeding to patients unless they have attended the specific training
- Patients can only be taken off the ward/hospital site with the permission of the nurse in charge and after completion of a risk assessment e.g. inpatients being accompanied outside/to the shops or escorting outpatients home
- Patients can be taken in wheelchairs after volunteers have had wheelchair training
