London, United Kingdom University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Full time

This postholder will be required to take a major role in UCLH’s red cell disorders team, working with colleagues in clinical and laboratory haematology at UCLH, as well as a number of partners at other organisations. The role will also include a role within the outpatient general haematology team. Inpatient duties will be for patients with red cell disorders.

The red cell Specialist Haemoglobinopathy Team at UCLH is also one of the four national Haemoglobinopathy Coordinating Centres (HCC) for thalassaemia and rare inherited anaemia and one of the ten national Haemoglobinopathy Coordinating Centres (HCC) for sickle cell disorder. There is an active research programme at UCLH for red cell disorders and transfusion, clinical trials, laboratory, artificial intelligence and genomics. There are close links with UCL and the Clinical Research Informatics Unit as part of the Institute of Health Informatics as well as a sub theme leadership of the new non-malignant haematology theme at UCLH.

The successful applicant will be expected to join the five other red cell consultants at UCLH to manage the inpatient and outpatient care of patients with red cell disorders at UCLH

The role will involve two adult red cell clinics and one adult general haematology clinic per week. The appointee will be expected to attend the red cell MDTs and be involved in governance and service development activities.

The role will also include cover for leave for the red cell disorder genetic counselling clinic, to a maximum of 10 clinics per year.

Attending and on call will be for the red cell service at UCLH only. This will involve care of inpatients with red cell disorders. Out of hours on call will involve care of patients with red cell disorders and may also involve out-of-hour transfusion cover, where the issue is not major haemorrhage or coagulopathy. There will be no day time commitment to transfusion, although the post-holder may be required to liaise with the Trust lead for BT +/- other staff during working hours, in order to provide a safe and seamless service.

Applicants should have a special interest in red cell disorders and preferably a higher medical degree in this or a related area.

The appointee would be expected to support research within areas identified and develop their own particular area of interest. Collaboration with other investigators is encouraged.

The Surgery and Cancer Board, led by Medical Director Professor Geoff Bellingan, provides services based in the UCH Tower, UCH at Westmoreland Street, Grafton Way Building at UCH and the UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre, with 5 divisions, each with a Divisional Clinical Director and Divisional Manager: Cancer, Surgical specialties, Gastrointestinal services, Imaging and Theatres and Anesthesia

Within the Cancer Division, the Department of Clinical Haematology provides comprehensive care for all haematological disorders, both malignant and non-malignant. The new Grafton Way Building facility has expanded the total haematology inpatient bed base to ~100, including a 14 bedded haematology isolation unit and a 10 bedded ITU.

There are active clinical and research programmes in lymphoma, leukaemia, myeloma, transplant, immunotherapy, coagulation, TTP, blood transfusion and red cell disorders. The directorate works closely with laboratory haematology services, which are managed as part of the clinical support division. There is also a cellular therapy unit, providing accredited facilities to support the department’s ambitious programme in stem cell harvests, gene therapy and immunotherapy and a large apheresis unit, performing both therapeutic and harvesting procedures.

The primary commitment will be undertaking clinical duties, supporting and developing the red cell service at UCLH. Participation in regional and national meetings is important with the aim of developing a national profile.

Clinical work will be outpatient-centred in the UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre and involve inpatient attending on a rotational basis. Active participation in red cell MDTs, audit and research is encouraged.

The post-holder will be expected to take part both in the teaching of medical undergraduates and the supervision and training of junior doctors.
