This is an exciting opportunity to come and join our friendly team as a Speech and Language Therapy Assistant.

The Adult Speech and Language Therapy team is based at Chesterfield Royal Hospital and provides inpatient and outpatient services across Medicine/Neurology, Stroke, Head and Neck Cancer and ENT.

To work 3 days/week as part of the Adult Speech and Language Therapy team at Chesterfield Royal Hospital providing services to both inpatient and outpatient teams for ENT, Head and Neck, Stroke and Medicine/Neurology.

**The post holder will**:

- assist and support the Speech and Language Therapy team in the treatment of patients with communication and swallowing disorders to promote independence by improving functional communication and eating and drinking skills.
- work under the guidance and direction of the SLT in the Videofluoroscopy (X-ray of swallowing), FEES (Fibreoptic Endoscopic Examination of Swallowing) Clinics and the EEL (Endoscopic Examination of Larynx) Clinics.

The Adult Speech & Language Therapy Team contributes to the delivery of outstanding patient care by:

- Providing high quality, patient centred intervention across patient pathways.
- Supporting patients and their family/carers to optimise quality of life.
- Working closely with the MDT to maximise functional recovery.

**CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES**:
To work under the guidance and direction of the SLT in the delivery of the Adult SLT service to the ENT, Stroke and Med/neuro teams.

To work under the guidance and direction of the SLT in the Videofluoroscopy (X-ray of swallowing), FEES (Fibreoptic Endoscopic Examination of Swallowing) Clinics and the EEL (Endoscopic Examination of Larynx) Clinics.

To undertake the roles and responsibilities documented in the FEES/EEL standard operating procedures.

To carry out therapeutic activities and monitoring of patients with communication difficulties as described in the SLT treatment plan.

To screen new patients for communication difficulties in conjunction with the SLT.

To carry out treatment and monitoring of patients with swallowing difficulties in line with the SLT treatment plan/recommendations.

To report clearly and discuss patient’s treatments with the SLT managing their overall care.

To adapt communication or tasks within the treatment plan to suit patients or circumstances.

To liaise with and support patient’s family/carers, demonstrating empathy and ensuring effective communication.

To develop therapy resources as requested by the SLT team.

To be involved in the education and training of students and other members of the MDT.

To undertake a range of duties to ensure efficient running of the department, filing, taking accurate telephone messages, general housekeeping and caring for equipment.

To be accountable for own actions and work within boundaries of competence and role, seeking advice as appropriate.
