**COG’s Group Facilitator**

Age UK Herne Bay & Whitstable is committed to providing high quality standard of services to older people. Our staff and volunteers play an important contribution to that standard. This job description does not cover all the tasks involved in the job. Therefore, it is essential that any person employed by UK Herne Bay & Whitstable is willing to undertake any reasonable task delegated to them.

**Hours: 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. Fridays (but ability to cover other days for sickness & annual leave)**

**Salary: £10.09 per hour (pending pay review April 2023)**

**Responsible to: Chief Officer at Age UK Herne Bay & Whitstable**

**Line Managed by: Community Services Manager**

**Purpose of the Job**:
To organise and facilitate a COG’s Group for people with a diagnosis of Dementia or other form of memory loss. COG’s is an extended form of Cognitive Stimulation Therapy to engage with members to help them make the most of their skills and mental functions through themed exercise and activities. The sessions are delivered with support from a small, dedicated team of volunteers.

**Main duties and responsibilities**:

- To develop and create an activity program in line with the CST model.
- Encourage and support members in maintaining independence skills and participating in social, recreational and community activities to meet the needs of individual members.
- To plan activities that will maintain interest and progression over a period.
- To support members to explore/devise new activities.
- To work closely with a small team of volunteers.
- To always maintain confidentiality and observe data protection in line with our confidentiality policy.
- Organise and serve lunch and drinks for members.
- Prepare and serve meals and drinks to meet members dietary needs and in accordance with appropriate health and hygiene procedures to ensure a high standard.
- Record and monitor member progress, level of functioning and other

necessary records.
- Raise concerns with members family/ carer and offer advice around services that can meet members needs should COGS become unsuitable.
- Liaise with other departments to ensure continuity of support and to meet member’s needs.
- Use technology (including a Smart TV) to enhance members experience of activities.
- Attend staff and one-to-one meetings on a regular basis and other team meetings when required.
- Attend training courses and complete online training as required. Assist in the training of other care staff as directed.
- Comply with Health and Safety, Fire Regulations, and all other Age UK policies.
- Arrange holiday cover.

**CRITERIA**

**QUALIFICATIONS**

Dementia specific training would be helpful but can be provided.

Good numeracy and literacy skills.

**EXPERIENCE**

Experience of caring for people in a working, voluntary or family environment.

Experience of dementia in a working, voluntary or family environment.

**SKILLS AND ABILITIES**

Ability to attend other online training sessions to ensure skills are up-to-date.

Ability to communicate in a clear, patient and encouraging manner with members.

To have a ‘can do’ attitude and a cheery disposition.

Ability to work unsupervised.

Ability to use own initiative.

Ability to communicate in a clear and effective way with work colleagues, visitors, and volunteers.

Ability to provide support to members and family members in accordance with the Cog’s ethos.

Written and numeric skills to complete detailed records and reports.

Ability to record members progress accurately, identify any changes in well-being.

Ability to deal with day-to-day problems and identify promptly any concerns with your line manager.

Ability to have empathy with members and their family carers.
