**Job description**:
The Ports and Shipping division sits within the Maritime Directorate and are responsible for championing Ports and Shipping across the Department for Transport (DfT) and Government in order to facilitate their economic contribution to the UK.

The team is focussed on understanding and overseeing ports legislation, maintaining close engagement and an in-depth understanding of the sector, their challenges and opportunities and the avenues within Government we can influence on the sector’s behalf to ensure it realises it economic growth potential, contributing to levelling up.

This is a dynamic team that recently been instrumental in the delivery of new legislation to make fair seafarer pay a condition of port access, coordinated government’s response to port industrial actions and is in the process of driving forward a number of policy and legislative improvement opportunities for the sector. You will work closely with colleagues within your own team, a broad range of policy areas across the Department, Other Government Departments and senior industry stakeholders.

**Person specification**:
You will be a motivational leader to drive a team to be fully engaged in their work and achieve high quality outputs. You will be someone who can provide emotional intelligent support during challenging periods and encourage an inclusive team spirit. Very organised, you will have the ability to co-ordinate workloads and deliver results.

You will display excellent interpersonal skills and be a trusted adviser, with the credibility to influence and challenge effectively to gain consensus on complicated areas of policy and will display resilience dealing with ambiguity and uncertainty. With excellent collaborative skills, you will build strong working relationships with your colleagues across Government and key industry partners.

Having experience of policy or commercial knowledge in the maritime sector would be an advantage but is not essential.

**_ Your key duties and responsibilities will include:_**
- Driving forward the Seafarers Wages Bill and enabling secondary legislation, that will introduce a condition of part access to pay seafarers with close ties to the UK an equivalent to UK national minimum wage.
- Proactively identify funding and investment opportunities for the sector on a rolling basis.
- Working closely with colleagues across Whitehall to ensure that ports and shipping issues are well represented, and that the division is a leading voice in discussions around maritime supply chains.
- Being a proactive member of the division and directorate leadership team and contribute to making this an exciting, supportive and inclusive place to work.

**Further Information**

You will have the option to be based in our London office attracting the London salary, or in Leeds or Birmingham attracting the National salary. Occasional travel to attend meetings in our London office will be required for key meetings or for team events.

A minimum of 40% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.
