We are looking to recruit a Lead Midwife for Tobacco Dependence Treatment Service, working 37.5 hours per week.

We are looking for an exceptional, enthusiastic and skilled Midwife to join our Midwifery team as a Lead Midwife for Tobacco Dependence.

The Lead Midwife for Tobacco Dependence will provide visible leadership, evidence-based information and education to women and their families, in line with current public health guidance.

Working in partnership with service users, the multi-disciplinary team, and local stakeholders to improve and protect health and well being, to improve the health of the most deprived families (Department of Health 2013). Key work will focus upon improving outcomes of women with the single biggest modifiable risk factors for pregnancy and developing and implementing processes to secure a year-on-year increase in engagement of smokers with the Treating Tobacco Dependency Team.

Provide a visible, accessible, and professional presence, acting as a role model by providing leadership and support within the midwifery and multidisciplinary teams.

Develop in house training & education programmes. Regularly delivering training on the Baby Clear programme for new & relevant members of the midwifery team.

Provide stop smoking updates for midwives as part of their annual core training programme in conjunction with Saving Babies Lives (SBL)

Supporting specialist tobacco dependence treatment maternity advisors with regard to their role in smoking cessation and promotion of smoke free homes.

Engaging obstetricians with regard to their role in the stop smoking agenda

Developing a culture to support all learners to increase their knowledge and expertise in relation to stopping smoking in pregnancy.

Linking with the Stop Smoking Service providers to ensure the approach to smoking cessation related professional development is consistent with that taken in other areas of the Trust.

Managerial and professional accountability for the effective delivery of care for women around tobacco dependence in accordance with national; regional and local guidelines.

Develop, inform, and implement strategies to ensure health professionals are adequately trained to support women and their families with health improvement measures

Represent Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust at local, regional, and national level when appropriate, influencing service development in relation to public health. The post holder will work closely with the Senior Clinical Midwifery Management Team to further develop related pathways and guidelines to assure appropriate and responsive care.

On-Call

Please note that senior positions (AFC band 8A or above) may be expected to participate in an on-call rota, if the role is predominantly operational.

To work collaboratively with the Saving Babies Lives (SBL) team and clinical audit department to collect, analyse and report on statistical information in line with Care Group, Trust and National requirements.

Ensure that high standards of care in relation to public health are provided and maintained and act appropriately when standards are not being maintained

Undertake staff appraisal in line with Trust policy.

To work collaboratively with the SBL Lead Midwife, input into Maternity Governance, report risk management issues to appropriate personnel as per Trust policy.

Be proactive in the development of practice/ services within area of expertise, through business planning process / service development, in conjunction with Senior Managers.

Effectively manage sickness, absence, and attendance within the Trust’s Attendance Management Policy

Communication and working relationships

To ensure that all team members report change in patient progress effectively, both verbally and in written form. Ensure that accurate, legible, and comprehensive midwifery records according to NMC and local guidelines.

Where appropriate, interpret and present clinical information to clients and their families, demonstrating the highest levels of interpersonal and communication skills. Giving highly complex information to clients and families where there may be barriers to understanding. Provide relevant verbal and written information.
