- **Duties and Responsibilities**

**Key Duties**
- Actively contribute to the overall research performance, skilling, training, innovation and engagement activities of the College and inspire others to do the same
- Provide professional advice and guidance in bioinformatics to internal and external researchers that will have nationwide impacts, using judgement and creativity to suggest the most appropriate course of action where appropriate, and ensuring complex and conceptual issues are understood
- Take responsibility for resolving issues independently where they fall within set role objectives
- Independently contribute to training development in BIoinformatics
- Be responsible for co-ordinating and delivering a range of bioinformatics training options for staff and PhD students to enable colleagues to better engage with their data, use specialised software and develop core bioinformatics skills
- Ensure that the provision of bioinformatics services is delivered to stakeholders, proactively changing the delivery according to customer requirements
- Establish working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links with the University’s Schools/Directorates and outside bodies as required
- Plan and deliver specific small scale projects, co-ordinating and supervising project teams created as needed
- Undertake a variety of administrative duties to support the project team
- Instruct and guide other employees across the University and external partners in bioinformatics
- Develop and maintain research and teaching networks through regularly attending national and international conferences and participating in relevant local meetings and seminars
- Be closely involved in the drafting of research manuscripts for publication and to take a leading role on data analysis and data management aspects
- Develop approaches that enable the efficient processing, analysis, storage, backup and access of data. You will use commercial software and your own pipelines to normalise and analyse data and achieve publication quality data to enable biologically relevant conclusions to be made
- Contribute to the strategic development of bioinformatics and genomics and initiatives within the College

- Ensure that an understanding of the importance of confidentiality is applied whilst undertaking all duties

**Essential Criteria**

Qualifications and education
- 1. Degree/NVQ4 or equivalent Professional membership/experience
- Knowledge, skills and experience
- 2. Substantial experience of working in bioinformatics and the management of biological data evidenced by an established and proven portfolio of research and/or relevant industrial experience.
- 3. Able to demonstrate expert professional knowledge in bioinformatics as an authority in the field and to give advice and guidance to internal and external customers.
- 4. Proven experience in developing new processes and procedures in bioinformatics.
- 5. Ability to design, deliver and continuously develop staff and PhD student training in bioinformatics.
- Customer service, communication and team working
- 6. Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex and conceptual bioinformatics ideas clearly and confidently to a wide range of people or customers using high level skills and a range of media.
- 7. The ability to act as a leader for training programmes and co-ordinate with others to ensure needs and expectations are met.
- 8. Proven ability to develop networks in order to contribute to long term developments.
