The Scientific Research and Innovation Group delivers public health impact, world-leading research innovation, and a unique proposition via an ambitious Science Strategy which will balance innovation against sustainability and affordability. It is divided into 6 sub-Groups, Innovation Accelerator, Clinical Investigations and Trials, Research and Development, Standards Lifecycle, Control Testing and Quality Assurance and Health & Safety.

(R&D) delivers an internationally leading programme through five scientific sections, supporting development of and access to novel biological medicines for human health, physical biological standards, diagnostics, vaccines, biotherapeutics and advanced therapy medicinal products. We work closely with partners including WHO, major funding bodies, academia, industry and biotech to support regulatory science underpinning the development and assessment of new biological medicines. We have staff supported by central funding, external grants and contracts, and PhD students.

**What’s the role?**

We are seeking an expert to lead our Analytical and Biological Sciences (ABS) Team. You will drive and support the long-term strategy and day to day management of the Team, accountable to the Deputy Director of R&D and working with the R&D senior team. You will encourage support for laboratory-based science beyond your direct management through direction of a number of analytical teams, supporting collaborative working within and external to the team and Agency.

**Key responsibilities**:

- Expert, strategic leadership of the ABS section, with expert communication skills as applied to a diverse range of internal and external, national and international relationships
- Provision of a high-quality technology resource for SRI and the Agency, to include next generation sequencing and bioinformatics, biostatistics, formulation (biologicals lyophilisation, stability) science R&D to optimise and analyse freeze-drying processes appropriate for biological reference materials and medicines, in vivo facility, mass spectrometry, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, and other spectroscopic methods.
- Maintain status as an internationally recognised scientific programme and ensure staff are able to develop collaborative R&D activities including developing post graduate students, aligned with the scientific strategy, alongside providing underpinning resource
- Work closely with expert Agency colleagues across all groups to provide expert advice relating to the analytical science within the role remit; working as a member of the Research and Development senior team to deliver expert resource, research and leadership
