The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at UHSussex spans across 4 sites - Royal Sussex County Hospital Brighton, Princess Royal Hospital Haywards Heath, Worthing Hospital Worthing & St Richards Hospital Chichester. This job will be based across Royal Sussex County Hospital Brighton with some activity at Princess Royal Hospital Haywards Heath. Elective in-patient and day-case gynaecological surgery occurs predominantly at the PRH, whilst gynaecological oncology and most emergency gynaecology activity and operating take place at the RSCH but also at the PRH site. Outpatient clinics occur in both hospitals. Additional gynaecological outpatient and operating activity is undertaken at Lewes Victoria Hospital in Lewes.

The maternity unit is also delivered on both sites with consultant-led services at both RSCH and PRH working to common protocols across the Trust. High risk obstetrics is concentrated at RSCH with ready access to the Level 3 neonatal unit (Trevor Mann Baby Unit).

Both sites have ambulatory obstetric units and the obstetric triage units function 24/7 at both sites. Routine foetal diagnostic work is undertaken in-house with referral pathways to tertiary foetal medicine units for more complex care.

The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department at UHSussex has an excellent working relationship with departments in neighbouring trusts and is already functioning as a tertiary referral centre for the South East Coast region.

The successful applicant will be actively involved in acute and elective obstetrics and gynaecology. As a minimum you will have a special interest in foetal medicine or sub spec training will be advantageous.

You will be required to be part of the on call consultant rota covering both obstetrics and gynaecology. Involvement in service development, managerial and quality & safety initiatives are encouraged.

Responsibilities will include;
To run antenatal clinics (including foetal medicine)

To run gynaecology outpatient clinics

To run day case theatre lists

To work with the other O&G consultants to ensure continuity of service provision

To provide supervision and training of junior medical staff

To be involved in appraising and assessing juniors.

To contribute to complaint & incident management as well as clinical administration.

To develop the service along with the other Consultants

The job plan will be based on minimum of 10 PAs to include 8 DCC PAs and 2 SPAs and will allow for flexible working and time shifting. This may be worked flexibly over a seven day working week. It is anticipated that patient related administration would be performed within the confines of 9 PAs.
