An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and energetic individual to join the busy Pathology Blood Tranfusion team at Pilgrim Hospital as a Medical Laboratory Assistant. The department is part of the Path Links networked NHS Pathology Service offering a wide range of diagnostic investigations on tissue, blood, and fluid samples across Lincolnshire, and is also part of the East Midlands Pathology Network, ME2.

The post is based within the Pathology departments at Pilgrim Hospital, working five days a week for 16 hours, Monday 10:00-13:00, Tuesday 09:30-13:00, Wednesday 09:30-13:00, Thursday 09:30-13:00, Friday 10:00-13:00.

The post is based within the Pathology departments at Pilgrim Hospital, working five days a week for 16 hours, Monday 10:00-13:00, Tuesday 09:30-13:00, Wednesday 09:30-13:00, Thursday 09:30-13:00, Friday 10:00-13:00.

**Main Responsibilities include**:

- Anti-D Prophylaxis - Issuing RAADP (as requested on WebV)
- Blood withdrawals - Use of Blood track to ensure the safe return of blood units from the various blood issue fridges throughout the hospital (to include the satellite fridges).
- Temperature Monitoring - of fridges, freezers and incubators. Also to include checking alarm status with switchboard, and any problems to be reported immediately to BMS staff. To include changing temperature charts on a weekly basis.
- Cleaning/Maintenance of Equipment - To ensure a cleaning schedule is implemented and adhered to for various pieces of equipment in the laboratory, such as the centrifuges and water baths. This must be documented on a regular basis.
- Centrifugation and storing of samples, ensuring appropriate rotation of filing racks etc.
- Booking in samples and loading onto automated blood grouping analyser. Topping up analyser with reagents/cassettes as appropriate.
- Closely monitoring stock levels of consumables within Blood Transfusion.
- Photocopying, filing.
- Checking for Blood Bank post in office.
- Sending out HLA reports to their appropriate destination.
- Telephone liaison with community midwives and other hospital staff.
- Chasing up “urgent” transfusion requests for BMS staff
- Merging of patient records in iLAB
- Ensuring blood stocks are up-to-date on the Blood Stocks Management Scheme, including daily stock and wastage
