NUH is the Regional Neuroscience Centre for the East Midlands and runs a comprehensive Movement Disorder service encompassing the full range of standard and advanced therapies for Parkinson's disease, specialist clinics in complex Parkinson's, Huntington's disease, botulinum toxin injection and a busy movement disorder clinic treating the full spectrum of common and rare movement disorders. The movement team are also involved in ongoing clinical research.

This post is offered initially for one year fixed term and suited to individuals who are considering a career as a neurologist with a special interest in movement disorders. Applicants will have neurology specialty training (post CCT) or be within the final year of training with an opportunity to go out or programme.

The role will provide comprehensive training and experience in the management of movement disorders so that on completion the doctor will have the skills and expertise to manage Parkinson's and other movement disorders within either district general or regional neurology services.

The post will cover all aspects of the management of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) including patient selection, intraoperative assessment, post-operative care and programming. There will be an opportunity to participate in research.

Main duties of the job

The post is designed to deliver the following roles:

- To attend and contribute to a range of supervised movement disorder clinics including Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, Botulinum toxin, DBS.
- To deliver independent general neurology clinics supported by consultants.
- To contribute to all aspects of the DBS service including patient assessment, interoperative assessments, post operative management and programming.

The post holder will be expected to work flexibly and manage their own workload to deliver key milestones in a timely manner.

Working for our organisation

The movement disorders team within neurology consists of 2 consultants and 4 specialist nurses. We work closely with our geriatrician colleagues to provide comprehensive care designed to meet the needs of the individual patient. We are supported by a full range of MDT support with specialist physiotherapy and occupational therapy.

This role will also include close working with the functional neurosurgery team and neuromodulation nurses.

The post holder will work primarily within the movement disorder team but will also be part of the wider neurology team at NUH.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
- MRCP or equivalent qualification
- Full GMC registration and licence to practice
- Equivalent to ST6 level specialist in neurology

Desirable criteria
- Postgraduate qualification
- Eligible for entry on GMC Specialist Register

Experience

Essential criteria
- Sufficient Training in general neurology to allow independent (supported) clinical practice
- Logbook/eportfolio and work-based assessments indicating validated experience of appropriate range of experience
- Audit experience

Desirable criteria
- Participation in research

Communication and Relationship Skills

Essential criteria
- Demonstrate the Ability to work as part of a team
- Demonstrate the Ability to keep good medical records and communicate with other hospital depts
- Demonstrate the Ability to understand and communicate with patients and colleagues

- Demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication, as set out in the GMC’s Good Medical Practice (2013).
