JOB SUMMARY
This post is ideal for either an FY3 level doctor (or above) or a current trainee looking for an Out of Programme (OOPE) opportunity.
This is a post based in Surgery at NUH and works closely alongside the NUH Undergraduate Medical Education Department (UMED). The post will offer a unique combination of teaching within the QMC and City Campus and the HEE fellowship project looking at the delivery of integration of undergraduate medical students onto the wards.
Main duties of the job
**Teaching in Surgery (60%)**
The aim of the post is to work alongside the Clinical Teaching Fellows and the Undergraduate Education Manager (currently Nick Kythreotis) to both deliver teaching to medical students at NUH and also to develop new initiatives when teaching students.
**HEE Fellowship Project (40%)**
Integration of undergraduate medical students into the ward team environment has become an increasing challenge over the last ten years with the increase in medical student numbers, the loss of the firm structure and the rotational nature of the medical juniors. This contrasts starkly with the integration of nursing students who are an integral part of the ward team. This project aims to investigate the most effective way to integrate the undergraduate medical student into the ward team. This is particularly important with the imminent introduction of medical apprenticeships. It will include multidisciplinary experience with students being asked to present patients in MDTs, or having specific roles allocated to them on ward rounds etc. to capitalise on a “communities of practice” model similar to the nursing students.
Working for our organisation
Our values are: Caring and helpful; Safe and Vigilant for our patients and colleagues; Being Clinically Excellent and driving innovation to meet the needs of our patients; Using our Resources wisely whilst; Providing Quality products, services and experiences for staff and patients
