**Head of Features**

Location: New Scientist Headquarters - London

Position: Permanent

**Salary**: £60-67k depending on experience

**Job Introduction**

This position forms part of the senior leadership team within editorial and will drive the evolution of our longform journalism from a print-first to a digital-first approach.

They will also have responsibility for maintaining the high standards expected from our content, oversee idea generation and commissioning by the team and help to develop junior members of the features team.

**Main Responsibilities**
- Develop and lead the features team
- Ensure a constant pipeline of agenda setting, cutting edge and fascinating features across the sciences.
- Responsible for overseeing the features team's transition to digital first, looking at both the types of longform content we produce and how we produce it
- Work to evolve our features strategy to ensure digital success, including new ways of telling stories
- Ensure our features content and its presentation on all platforms, both online and in print, is of the highest quality possible
- Develop ideas for and commission timely and compelling features when required
- Develop ideas with junior team members and provide feedback to team members on edits and commissions
- Contribute to cover discussions, including around artwork and cover lines
- Commission, edit or write weekly leaders
- Occasionally write features, parts of specials, book reviews, opinion and news
- Oversee features budget
- Line manage members of the team
- Work closely with senior colleagues across all editorial departments, and also across marketing and commercial and technology, to ensure standards are kept rigorously high
- As a senior member of the team, provide general leadership and support to colleagues across the company

**Person Specification**

Knowledge & Experience
- Significant hands-on understanding of digital journalism and/or experience transforming a team from a print-first to a digital-first approach
- Clear vision and purpose for the evolution of the features team to digital
- Significant editing experience at a senior level for a national or international news organisation
- Excellent editorial judgement
- A passionate interest in both science and technology
- A degree in science or technology, ideally
- Experience of working closely with commercial colleagues
- Good track record of effective people management
