**Job description**:
It’s an exciting time to join the MCA with this interesting opportunity to get involved with and drive change within training, education and examination, as an Examiner of Masters and Mates within the Directorate of UK Maritime Services (UKMS).

UKMS responsibilities include the survey and inspection of UK ships and foreign flagged vessels in UK waters as well as the promotion and implementation of UK safety, environmental and navigational regulatory regimes and the development and implementation of policy in relation to competency standards, Seafarer Training Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW), officer certification, safe manning, radio training and SMarT, promoting the health and safety of seafarers by providing for seafarer medical examinations and by supporting safe working practices on board ship.

Reporting directly to the Head of Nautical Examiners, the Examiner of Masters and Mates, will support delivery of the MCA's Strategic Objectives and three year Business Plan to ensure that seafarers choosing the UK Certificate of Competency have access to high quality, effective and relevant training and assessments, wherever they choose to study, ensuring all national and international standards and obligations are met.

The successful applicant will make positive changes to the training and qualification requirements for the Maritime industry by supporting the modernisation of seafarer training (including digitised assessments) and interfaces with our Training Providers, the development of training and certification, future shipping technologies and innovations, and other activities to ensure the safety and wellbeing of seafarers and all those working in the maritime environment.

The role holder will enjoy leading stakeholder engagement across all areas of the maritime industry collaborating and liaising with various branches across the MCA as well as external stakeholders including shipping companies, training providers, colleges and universities and seafarers. They will provide technical and operational advice and guidance and solve complex technical problems in relation to seafarer training, documentation and certification.

This role provides the perfect opportunity for a motivated individual to play a key role in a significant and positive change journey, influencing change in the modernisation of seafarer training and really making a difference to the standards within the Maritime industry.

This role will be based in one of the advertised offices. MCA supports flexible working and operates a hybrid working model between home and office for this role, giving you greater flexibility over where and when you work. Details of the arrangement will be discussed further with your line manager.

There will be a requirement for travel on official duty within the UK and overseas or offshore, which may involve overnight stays away from home. A passport valid for international travel is required as well as a full driving licence valid for driving in the UK.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

- Contributing to internal projects i.e. digitisation of oral exams and MCA assessments etc.
- Implementing the manning and seafarer training requirements on Domestic and Fishing vessels and assisting in modernising the training and assessment regime in consultation with the stakeholders.
- Implementing the requirements of STCW convention as amended for seafarers on UK vessels and for seafarers with UK Certificate of competency.
- Providing technical and operational advice to industry and the public in accordance with MCA policies, contributing to the delivery of a regulatory clima
