Family Support Workers

North Somerset, United Kingdom North Somerset Council Full time

Job description

This post is offered in collaboration with The University of Exeter’s CYP IAPT programme. CYP-IAPT stands for, Children and Young People’s Improving Access to Psychological Therapies and is part of a service transformation programme delivered by Health Education England that aims to increase the workforce for children and young people’s mental health services.

North Somerset Family Wellbeing Team are looking to recruit 2 x 0-5 Family Support workers on a fixed term basis for 1 year. You will be required to undertake a graduate/post-graduate qualification on the 0-5 strand within CYP-IAPT.

This programme is a postgraduate diploma in evidence-based psychotherapies for children and young people, validated by the University of Exeter. Developed with the Association for Video Interaction Guidance (AVIGuk). It is a full-time multi-disciplinary programme (two days per week teaching/ supervision, with the rest of the week spent in clinical practice), in three 10-week terms, commencing in January. The aim of the programme is to provide health and social care professionals working in CYP IAPT services with the opportunity to develop general core clinical skills and theoretical knowledge, with specialism in children aged 0-5 as well as gaining clinical experience and competency in the evidence-based interventions of Video Interaction Guidance and The Incredible Years Parenting Programme.

The programme is grounded in evidence-based practice and is informed by the latest advances in clinical and experimental research. The attainment of clinical competence is measured by validated assessment tools.

The programme and curriculum has been approved by the Association of Video Interaction Guidance UK (AVIG-UK) and applicants on the 0-5s pathway, will have the opportunity to work towards Video Interaction Guidance practitioner status alongside this programme.

Students will complete a CYP-IAPT core skills module which aims to develop essential skills that are fundamental to evidence-based practice, to include assessment, formulation, and the use of routine outcome measures. Students will access teaching on core theoretical models essential to infant, child, and family working.

Other modules are specific to 0-5s working. These include:

- Fundamentals of working with 0-5s: This module includes an introduction to the core theoretical (i.e., attachment, mentalisation, child development, social learning theory) and practical (i.e., parent-infant observation, risk assessment, multi-agency working) elements of 0-5s working.
- Video Interaction Guidance (VIG): Students will be trained to deliver VIG with parent and infants/toddlers showing interactional concerns. It is the leading intervention to promote sensitive parenting.
- Behavioural Approaches: Students will be trained in both Incredible Years (IY) Pre-School Basic and Home Coaching programmes to deliver evidence-based interventions for children aged 18- 60 months experiencing regulatory and emerging conduct problems. IY is a leading intervention for behavioural concerns.
- This is an exciting opportunity to learn about evidence-based approaches for working with children, young people and their families and does require students to use their own initiative and time outside of work for studying. It is likely that you will need to spend several hours a week of your own time on course related work including preparing for supervision and coursework deadlines. The successful applicants will spend 2-3 days per week at the University of Exeter and the remainder of the week in North Somerset undertaking clinical work for the course.

Interviews will be conducted jointly between North Somerset Family Wellbeing Team and Exeter University.

Valid driving licence and own transport, or be able to provide alternative, suitable method of travel is an essential condition for this role.
