**Job summary**:

Within the Communications Directorate you will be welcomed into a supportive network and enabled to build a fulfilling and impactful career. We provide a communications service to the department and other Defra group bodies, such as the Environment Agency, the Rural Payments Agency (RPA), Natural England and the Animal Plant and Health Agency (APHA).

We are looking for someone to join our team as one of our Strategic Communications Assistant. The person in this role will support the development and delivery of our plans and wider strategy, joining up the work across the Defra Group communications directorate to ensure effective reach and engagement with all of our audiences.

**Job description**:
You will:

- Work with a range of Policy teams to provide expert communications advice and guidance to help shape and deliver public policies and services
- Scope requirements and bring together communications specialists to develop targeted and engaging communications strategies
- Develop communications strategies and messages with the end audience in mind using insight, past learnings and customer/stakeholder feedback
- Work with policy leads to identify the long-term requirements and develop coherent and joined up communication proposals. Identify and act on any opportunities and mitigate risks
- Provide administrative support to the communications team, including feeding into communications grids, co-ordinating status reports, and tracking communications outputs

**Person specification**:
You will have
- experience in using a wide mix of channels including digital, media, stakeholder, events and branding
- Strong influencing skills, and experience of building positive relationships and establishing networks internally and externally with stakeholders, partners and colleagues
- Excellent planning, management and organisational abilities
- Experience of effectively working with and advising very senior colleagues
- The ability to work well under pressure, managing multiple priorities and tight deadlines
- Good analytical skills, plus excellent written and oral comms skills reflecting the need to explain complex policy to non-specialist audiences in a clear and engaging way
