Clinical Fellow in Urology
Clinical Duties The Clinical fellow will be responsible for the urology in patients and will participate in a shared middle grade timetable to carry out daily ward rounds with the other Clinical Fellows/Specialty doctors in the morning at The Royal Albert Edward Infirmary. Will carry out any emergency surgery after consultation with the Consultants, under supervision when required. Assist in the day to day activity of the urology department. This will include attending the Consultants Out-patient clinics, carrying out operative procedures (supervision level depending on the experience) and invasive investigations.
Additionally at all times a Clinical Fellow/Specialty Doctor will be at RAEI during normal working hours to provide emergency urology cover. The on call cover is 1 in 8 as are hot weeks. The on call is a reciprocal shared on call with a neighbouring trust, such that we only accept emergency admissions on alternate weeks. Appointees will only be required to provide cover at WWL, but may need to provide telephone advice to the neighbouring trust when on call out of hours.
The appointees will have an all day theatre list as part of their working week when not on hot week duties (except in exceptional circumstances when theatre lists are cancelled eg during Industrial action). Template Job Plan, On-Call & Other Commitments The job plan will identify the average time per week required by the average practitioner in the grade and specialty to perform the duties of the post, based upon 10 sessions per week with compensatory days off after weekends on call and after hot week duties There will be weekly variations to meet the needs of the department and cover absences of colleagues. This also allows the post holder to benefit from working with all consultants and develop a wide range of urological skills. The following gives an illustrative job plan: Mon Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday AM Ward round theatre Ward round / teaching duties Emergency clinic (A+E referrals) Ward round On site SPA time OPD Follow up PM Theatre Onsite SPA / Cover RAEI Opd New patients One stop clinic Cancer MDT Teaching ward round Flexible cystoscopies This is a provisional timetable; a full timetable will be agreed with the appointee on commencement.
Working Circumstances and on-call The out of hours on call Rota is currently 1 in 8 shared with other Urology Clinical Fellows and is non-resident on call. It attracts an additional 2 PAs. When on call the post will require cover for Urology with direct responsibility to the Consultant on call for Urology. The on call will require the Clinical Fellow to be non-resident.
Audit and Research To facilitate medical audit, junior medical staff must keep medical records in the manner prescribed by their Consultant/Division. Discharge letters must be done in real time on hospital electronic records system. Liaison with radiology and urology secretaries will be necessary regarding listing of patients and organising subsequent out-patient investigations. Opportunities will be available for participation in clinical audit and clinical research.
Participation in the Departmental audit activities is an essential element of the post. We also encourage participation in other quality improvement initiatives. Attendance at the audit meetings is mandatory. Administration The Clinical Fellow will be responsible for some of the administration work in the department including those in whom they are primary operating surgeon.
Study and Training The department is committed to training all staff and has an excellent record over past 6 years of core trainees and junior clinical fellows being successful at national Selection. The Trust encourages participation in the regional and local urological educational activities. The Department of Urology takes the view that in most specialities, clinical apprenticeship and individual study form the basis of preparation for higher qualifications, supplemented as available by attendance at approved courses, lectures and demonstrations locally or on a day release. The facilities of the medical Library are available for Medical Staff at all hospitals.
The main library is located on the Post Graduate Medical Centre and is under the care of the Librarian.
