The St Leonard’s Wellbeing Service encompasses a range of services to support patients affected by life-limiting illnesses, as well as their families and carers, across our region. Wellbeing Companions are based on the In Patient Unit at the Hospice which provides specialist palliative care for patients diagnosed with a life-limiting illness. They may be referred in for symptom control, respite, or end of life care.

**The role of Wellbeing Companion is aimed at improving quality of life for patients staying on the In Patient Unit, by offering meaningful activities, companionship and active listening support.**

**When am I needed?**

Volunteer shifts start at 14:00 and finish about 15.30, depending on uptake on the day. Shifts can be covered on a weekly, fortnightly or ad-hoc basis as need arises.

We are looking to train a new group of Wellbeing volunteers starting in March.

- Serving refreshments to patients and their visitors.
- Alerting staff to any immediate care needs.
- Reporting any concerns for a patient’s wellbeing, or any disclosures made to you, in a timely manner and in accordance with hospice safeguarding procedures (training will be given).

- Be able to engage people and put them at their ease.
- Have good quality listening skills - training and refresher training will be offered.

- Have a good understanding of personal and professional boundaries.
- Be able to maintain confidentiality within the bounds of our safeguarding obligations.

**How will I benefit from being a **Wellbeing Companion**?**
- Be part of a friendly and valued team.
- Enjoy some time in good company knowing you have made a difference to someone’s day.
- Receive thorough initial training and ongoing support and training.
- Be part of enhancing the quality of life for seriously ill people and their loved ones.
- Have the opportunity to reflect and share with others on a regular basis.
- Share your interests with someone new or learn a new skill or hobby.

**Support and Supervision**

You may also be invited to attend role specific in person meetings where appropriate.
