**Job summary**:
The work of the Department for Work and Pensions makes a difference to the lives of millions of people, right across the country.

The department’s overriding mission is quite simple: to improve people’s quality of life and the things that really matter to people, today and every day - to make someone’s tomorrow better than their yesterday.

This mission is underpinned by our values which guide how we are with each other, with our customers and how we deliver - we care, we deliver, we adapt, we work together, we value everybody.

DWP Communications plays a critical role in managing the reputation of this department that serves over 20 million customers across the country. We’re a busy, highly skilled, supportive community of experts delivering internal and external communications across a range of high-profile issues.

Our Internal Communications team is recognised across government as setting the standard for best practice, supporting our Permanent Secretary and leadership teams to engage colleagues across DWP. It’s vital that the department’s 90,000-plus colleagues, most of whom work in frontline roles, feel supported and engaged, understand how the department and our services are evolving, and recognise how these changes affect both them and their customers.

**Job description**:
In this role you will be required to work across our Internal Communications team to build strategic communications that drive the organisation to meet its core outcomes. An imaginative thinker, you will develop and deliver creative campaigns that help connect colleagues’ day-to-day work with the department’s priorities and future direction while supporting modernisation of the Civil Service.

You will be an inspirational leader, motivating and supporting your team to meet priorities and achieve consistently high standards.

You will be comfortable working with people at all levels including the department’s most senior leaders, using your expert knowledge to provide sound strategic advice and counsel, and supporting our leaders to communicate effectively.

You will represent Internal Communications to other parts of Strategic Communications and the department, building strong relationships with colleagues and partners across the business. You’ll be expected to develop a strong understanding of our audiences and channels so that you can give good, well considered advice to stakeholders on a range of issues that may affect DWP.

You’ll bring your digital and events management experience to bear on a range of colleague engagement opportunities including virtual, face to face and hybrid events and the creation of innovative content including graphics and videos.

You’ll use your expertise in insight and evaluation to support the delivery of compelling communications to a range of audiences across multiple channels.

No two days are the same; you’ll be expected to juggle priorities and continuously adapt to improve what we deliver. In return, you’ll be supported by an excellent team who work together and make work enjoyable.

**Person specification**:

- Significant experience or knowledge of internal communications, with transferable skills including the use of digital tools to inform, engage and motivate.
- Proven record of developing innovative, insight-driven communication plans that drive behaviour change.
- Ability to think strategically, taking in the wider context and spotting risks and opportunities.
- Ability to work effectively across and beyond team boundaries, making connections to enable collaborative planning and delivery.
- Confidence and ability to work with senior stakeholders, including the Permanent Secretary, Executive Team and Directors.
- Excellent copywriting and editorial experience and skills, with a keen eye for detail.
