About the Role

We are seeking an exceptional Senior Communications Officer to join our fast-paced press office at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in shaping our media strategy and ensuring the highest level of media coverage for our organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Media Relations: Develop and maintain strong relationships with national and trade journalists, securing media coverage for our key messages and priorities.
  • Press Office Support: Provide accurate, timely, and appropriate responses to incoming enquiries, briefing journalists in line with our key messages and priorities.
  • Content Creation: Research, write, and distribute press releases, features, letters, and other editorial material to promote our organization's work and expertise.
  • Spokesperson Briefing: Brief and support our senior spokespeople on media issues, ensuring they are well-prepared for interviews and media appearances.
  • Media Monitoring: Monitor daily media coverage relevant to surgery and our organization, pulling together the team's daily press cuts to share with our stakeholders.
  • Website and Social Media: Maintain and update the media sections of our website, working with our web team to develop rich digital content and actively participate in developing our social media profile.
  • Evaluation and Reporting: Produce evaluation reports of media coverage and communications activity, providing insights and recommendations for future improvements.
Requirements
  • Experience: At least two years' experience of working in a press office or similar communications role.
  • Skills: Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to write fluent, compelling copy free from grammatical or other errors. Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to identify key points, summarize findings, and report data and conclusions accurately.
  • Knowledge: Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint packages, as well as a strong understanding of journalists' needs and priorities.
  • Personal Qualities: Excellent interpersonal skills and integrity, with the ability to protect our organization's reputation for providing accurate and reliable information to the media. Strong prioritization skills and a flexible approach to respond to changing priorities and needs.
