**Job summary**:
Newly established, this will be a high-tempo, high profile appointment offering the opportunity to discover and develop international opportunities for MOD Defence Experimentation (DExp) in concert with NATO allies and key partners. Dealing with and overcoming topical, complex and occasionally contentious issues, the incumbent will be expected to represent MOD’s Defence Force Development (DFD) aims and objectives collaborating routinely at 1*/OF5 levels, and influencing more senior stakeholders within MOD, Partners Across Government (PAG) and other UK organisations, Allies and other international partner organisations.

The role includes understanding MOD’s DFD requirements and the shaping and influencing of other nations’ experimentation and wargaming planning, design, data capture, analyses, and reporting activities in order to ensure that MOD aims and objectives are achieved, and to ensure beneficial outputs from UK player participation. The role offers a good platform for individuals to develop their DExp and DFD knowledge and skills, their networking and influence skills, and their understanding of different nations’ approaches to the enhancement of military (and other) capabilities.

**Team**:
The Defence Experimentation and Wargaming (DEW) team’s purpose is to enable a coherent and collegiate approach to DExp (i.e. the activities that generate information and evidence via the scientific method), in support of Threat
- and evidence
- based decision-making within MOD.

The DEW team currently comprises the team leader - Deputy Head Defence Experimentation (a Grade 6 Civil Servant), an Assistant Head (AH) DEW (Grade 7) (both roles based at Northwood), and three military OF4s (Lt Col and equivalent SO1s), one from each single-Service) based at Shrivenham.

The team is expected to grow further with the recruitment of an OF4 to coordinate MOD participation in these international activities. This role will be line managed by AH International Experimentation & Wargaming.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

**Job description**:
***AH International Experimentation & Wargaming is a major new role in the Directorate of Joint Warfare (JW), within UK Strategic Command, based at Northwood Headquarters. Its focus is on the discovery, influence and development of Allies’ and partner nations experimentation and wargaming opportunities for MOD-wide benefit.

The incumbent will work with US, FVEY, and NATO allies, other national and international partners, and stakeholders from across MOD and wider Defence to:

- understand and assess the nature of international defence experimentation and wargaming activities, and the opportunities for (and benefits of) MOD participation;
- raise MOD stakeholder awareness of these international opportunities and to support senior-level decisions on UK participation;
- influence Allies’ and partner nations’ experimentation and wargame design and planning to enable effective MOD participation and exploitation of outputs;
- coordinate a coherent approach across UK participants in selected international experiments and wargames;
- link wider stakeholders with experimentation and wargaming artefacts to enable early and effective MOD involvement; and
- analyse outputs and enable effective exploitation of the knowledge gained from these activities.

The post-holder will therefore be expected to engage routinely with Allies and other partner nations on an informal basis and at their planning conferences. Regular international travel is to be expected.

In addition, AH International Experimentation & Wargaming will also be expected to:

- deliver pithy briefings to colleagues and seniors on behalf of the DEW team;
- deputise for DH DExp;
- represent the DEW team at boards, committees and meetings; and
- ensure the Chain of Command, other seniors and peers are kept informed of DExp and wargaming related issues, risks, challenges, and opportunities.

**Responsibilities**:
