**Summary of the Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) Apprentice role**

As the Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Apprentice you will work within the EHS Department and report directly to the Environmental Manager. You will be responsible for assisting in environmental management and health and safety systems across the Sterling site.

You will also participate in environmental monitoring programmes including, but not exclusive to; emissions to air and ground water, waste management, sustainability, energy and utility management and Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) initiatives.

**About the apprenticeship**

You will complete your apprenticeship in the Safety, Health and Environment Technician standard.

This is a Level 3 apprenticeship, equivalent to two A-levels and will take 24 months to complete.

All learning will be delivered in bite sized chunks, module by module. Your tutor will visit you on a 1 to 1 basis, and you will work on active health and safety projects in Sterling.

**Your responsibilities**
- Assisting in compliance activities relating to Environmental and Safety Regulations such as: Emergency Preparedness and Response (EPR), Duty of Care, Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH), Safe Environments Directorate (SED) and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH).
- Assisting in monitoring systems and ensuring compliance to ISO 14001.
- Assisting in environmental monitoring exercises.
- Assisting in the development of environmental objectives as part of the overall company Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) strategy and help track performance indicators to drive improvement.
- Promoting a positive Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) culture and assist in the development of programmes which generate continuous improvement in attitudes and behaviour, particularly with respect to the environment.
- Assisting in energy regulation compliance and contributing to energy efficiency and improvement opportunities with other departments.

**Requirements for the role**
- Minimum 5 GSCE’s at grades 4-9 including Maths, English & Science.
- A Level Chemistry or equivalent would be advantageous.
- Good level of Health and Safety awareness.
- Competent with IT systems.
- Able to work individually as well as part of a team with minimum supervision but having the confidence to understand your own limitations and ask for assistance.
- Must be prepared to follow a course of study to gain a formal qualification.
