**Job summary**:
- This post is a Surveillance Support Assistant, whose role is to provide support to Veterinary staff within a Surveillance Centre, acting as key point of contact and local source of knowledge for support issues within the Centre.
- They will also assist with the co-ordination of health and safety, and quality issues within a Surveillance Centre and across the wider Surveillance and Laboratory Services Department as required by the Surveillance and Laboratory Services Director, and provide general administrative support within the Surveillance Centre and across the wider Surveillance and Laboratory Services Department as required by the Surveillance and Laboratory Services Director.

The post holder will carry out any duties commensurate with the grade and purpose of the post including, but not limited to, the following:
**General Support**
- To be responsible for the receipt of carcasses/live animals and preparation of carcasses for veterinary inspection, including weighing, skinning, opening body cavities, removal of viscera as required.
- To be responsible for the receipt of samples into the centre, including opening of post and booking in samples with assistance from administrative staff as required.
- To ensure appropriate disposal of carcass and other clinical, laboratory and animal waste.
- To assist veterinary staff with euthanasia where necessary.
- To assist veterinary staff with carcass sampling and recording of findings, including collection of samples from carcass, and preparation of instruments/trays for sampling.
- To prepare and process smears on to suitable media, including smear reading as required.
- To be responsible for the storage, archiving and retention of samples.
- To ensure samples are collected, collated, appropriately packed and dispatched to other processing centres as required.
- To carry out statutory sampling such as BSE, Scrapie and poultry sampling.
- To complete necessary paperwork accurately, maintain laboratory records.
- To monitor and maintain relevant stocks and sundries, ordering media and other consumables as needed.
**Safety, Health and Wellbeing**
- To comply with APHA Health, Safety and Welfare policies and procedures.
- To assist the VIOs with management of safety within the laboratory.
- To ensure that chemicals and disinfectants are managed and stored safely.
- To carry out cleaning and disinfection routines, including sterilisation and fumigation of equipment used within the laboratory and PM room, cleaning and maintenance of the specimen reception, culture bay, outdoor clothing store, loose boxes, and environmental monitoring.
- To monitor and maintain cold stores, safety cabinets, balances, fridges and other equipment used within the laboratory and PM room, including arranging servicing of equipment as required, carrying out calibration and reporting malfunctions or other discrepancies to line manager, ensuring the safety of equipment.
**Quality**
- To assist the VIO/Local Quality Manager with the management of quality within the Centre.
- To collect and monitor appropriate data required to support the quality system (for example temperature monitoring, balance checks, autoclave performance).
- To assist with local auditing and clearing of actions arising from audits, in liaison with the Local Quality Manager.
- To assist with collation of quality information, such as complaints, audits, non-conforming product, proficiency testing results etc., for the Local Quality Manager.
- To co-ordinate relevant proficiency testing schemes, return of results, reviewing performance and investigating any anomalies.
**Administrative Support**
To assist with general administrative duties within the centre and across the wider Department to include telephone duties, use of APHA bespoke IT systems, dealing with enquiries, etc.
