Bereavement Midwifery Assistant

The maternity services are committed to upholding and maintaining the highest standards of evidence based practice and working in partnership with women and their families. We are looking for a highly motivated enthusiastic individual who has a keen interest in bereavement within maternity and neonatal services.
With the support of the Bereavement Midwives, the post holder with assist with providing caring, compassionate and individualised care to bereaved families who have experienced late miscarriage, Medical Termination of Pregnancy, stillbirth and Neonatal death, provide ongoing support whilst in hospital and once at home. This will include assisting with the coordination and delivery of all aspects of Bereavement Service for families.
Additionally, they will support the Bereavement Midwife with the facilitating the Rainbow Support Service, caring for women who are pregnant following a loss.
- Ensuring Information is handled and exchanged with care, accuracy, sensitivity, maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.
- Appropriately communicate sensitive information to women, families and staff.
- Engage with appropriate interpreting service if there are any language barriers.
- With support, be able to deal with families in emotionally difficult situations. Take appropriate action when confronted by aggressive clients / relatives.
- Participate, where appropriate, in bereavement group support sessions.
- Participate, where appropriate, in antenatal education sessions specifically for previously bereaved women.
- To make and receive phone calls from families and acquire assistance where required from the Bereavement Midwife.
- To assist n the delivery of direct patient care for currently/previously bereaved families by carrying out assigned tasks i.e. memory making, antenatal/postnatal care.
- Escort and chaperone patients as required around the hospital and in appointments/scans.
- Support currently/previously bereaved women during labour and birth, should they wish.
- Support with Previously bereaved women who are attending for elective cesarean sections.
- Attend follow up appointments for bereaved families if the Bereavement Midwife is unavailable.
- Administration duties i.e locating patient notes, answering or making telephone calls, maintaining spreadsheet, managing referrals, making bereavement documentation packs, photocopying and filing as needed.
