Introduction to the role

This role will fill a key function in the HarperNorth publishing team looking after the bulk of the non-fiction list in our third year of publishing and covering for the senior commissioning editor. We are a tight-knit team charged with delivering ambitious publishing for an imprint that is the flagship regional diversity initiative for HarperCollins, with established authors and a host of debuts and second outings to manage across the spring/summer period.

An emphasis on rigorous attention to detail, extremely good communication skills, confident management of multiple stakeholders, and a demonstrable passion for our books and their readers is key.

Core responsibilities
- Full desk-editing responsibilities - seeing titles through from manuscript to finished copies for a range of reissues and new books, including digital formats, ensuring plant costs are in line with budget for each project.
- Some structural and line-editing work on titles, including proofreading and permissions
- Coordinating editorial freelancers
- Preparing manuscripts for ebook conversion and typesetting
- Liaising with stakeholders at the relevant literary agencies/estates over the progress of the book through production, copy approval and day-to-day editorial matters
- Writing jacket copy (hb and pb) and selling copy for external sites, drafting jacket briefs and delivering covers to critical path
- Managing editorial information and metadata about the titles (AIS, Plan G Acquisitions, Metadata, P&Ls) to ensure accurate and up-to-date title/list information is available internally and externally
- Working with the wider team to deliver team objectives on diversity and inclusion, author care, critical path and consumer feedback
- Acting as a key point of contact for internal and external teams and stakeholders in each title
- General administrative duties (rejection letters, unsolicited manuscripts, minuting meetings)
- Liaising with authors and provide author care (author copies, sales information, schedules)
- Working effectively with the art and the production departments to ensure team are meeting deadlines
- Monitoring schedules on cover reveals, contract announcements and NetGalley
- Providing Bookscan figures when required, to collate useful information that will assist with commissioning decisions
- Reading widely across nonfiction market and to bring to attention of the team interesting books or positioning from other publishers
- Reading non-fiction submissions when required

Experience required

You will need to be aware of the different routes to market and formats across which a leading trade publisher operates and the different divisions and roles with which one has to interact as an editor (rights, production etc.) A genuine passion for publishing non-fiction is a must. Energy and enthusiasm are essential, and you will need to operate across the full sweep of a quite disparate and ambitious list of titles, from four-colour titles to serious narrative history - with all the attendant learning opportunities this entails.
