**_ This is an exciting role within the Science Group in UKHSA._**

**_ As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will report to the Section Head and will be part of the National Infection Service in the Science Team. _**

**_The post holder will act as a laboratory assistant to give technical and clerical support to the scientific services to patients and clients provided by the VEU. He or she will assist in the receipt and handling of biological samples, manage and maintain appropriate stock levels, and assist in general housekeeping and equipment maintenance throughout all VEU facilities. The post holder will also contribute to the day to day running of the PHE SEU archive and special residual serum collections in the VEU. He or she will be expected to carry out all tasks to Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) standards. Accuracy and attention to detail are essential._**

**Job description**:
**As the Medical Laboratory Assistant your main responsibilities will include**:
The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

- To participate in Quality Assurance and Quality Control activities and assist the department in maintaining United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) ISO 15189 and Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) compliance.
- To participate in audit processes and research projects as required.
- To attend regular Unit meetings and contribute to effective communication within the Unit.
- To monitor and maintain appropriate stock levels.
- Job Holder is expected to occasionally work under remote supervision of their supervisor following defined Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)/protocols and would be expected to refer non routine issues to their supervisor.
- To undertake on-going training and development and update Professional Development Plan, as required by the Unit Head.
- To perform sample receipt and handling including archiving of biological samples.
- To prepare samples and reagents following protocols.
- To prepare samples prior to transfer to testing laboratories.
- To take receipt of deliveries and prepare orders.
- To perform general housekeeping tasks including cleaning and disinfection of equipment and laboratory areas.
- To perform monitoring and routine maintenance of equipment.
- To transport waste material and patient samples for autoclaving (involves moderate lifting).
- To perform clerical duties, including use of computers, data entry, telephone enquiries.
- To dispose of tissue and patient samples in accordance with relevant guidelines.
- To work in a safe manner in accordance with MMMP and PHE Health and Safety policies and procedures.
- To assist VEU staff in analytical techniques.
- To carry out any other duties as required by the Section Head and Head/ Deputy Head of the VEU.

**We are looking for an exceptional Lab Assistant**

It is important through your CV and Statement of Suitability of 300 words that you give evidence and examples of proven experience of each of the following criteria:
**Essential**
- GCSE or Equivalent
- Evidence of training & development within a relevant pathology discipline
- Keyboard skills
- Good communication skills
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Problem solving skills
- Ability to follow written protocol
- Able to work on own initiative, organising and prioritising own workload to set deadlines
- An ability to maintain confidentiality and trust

**Desirable**
- NVQ level 2 or equivalent in appropriate laboratory support discipline
