Job summary

Virology, delivered from the Manchester Royal Infirmary site employs approximately�100 staff and has a workload exceeding 1,000,000 specimens per year. The department embraces a modern clinical virology service combining some traditional methodologies with a range of laboratory automation.

The post holder will act as a laboratory assistant to provide support to the scientific team providing services to patients and clients as an aid to clinical diagnosis.�

You will be expected to work hours, flexible between the hours of 8 - 8 Monday to Sunday

There are three positions available: 2 x permanent roles and one fixed term position for 12 months.� Roles we be offered in merit order.

Job description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivate Medical Laboratory Assistant. Previous experience in a similar role although advantageous is not essential as all necessary training will be given to post holder. The post holder will work as part of the laboratory team, providing a high level of microbiological analysis to provide patients with the highest level of diagnosis and treatment.
The laboratory is accredited by UKAS (ISO15189 standard)�
We actively encourage CPD activities.

The department requires staff to support the department in delivering a comprehensive Virology service over 7 days. Staff may be required to work a variety of shifts, including weekends, throughout the 24-hour period if appropriate to the post.

The laboratory has a friendly atmosphere with a good team spirit and offers the opportunity for you to develop personally and professionally. The department is a designated IBMS training laboratory, has an extensive quality system in operation and is fully accredited.

Main duties of the job

Sample receipt and handingSample preparation and reagent preparation following protocolsClerical duties, including use of computers, and data entry, telephone enquiries�Provide results service to wards, GPs, and other hospitals�Dealing with patients, visitors, and deliveriesMonitor and maintain appropriate stock levels, receipt of deliveries and preparation of ordersCleaning and disinfection of equipment and laboratory areas�Perform manual, semi-automated and automated tests according to protocolsDisposal of patient samples in accordance with relevant guidelinesAutoclaving of waste material and patient samples (involves moderate lifting)Portering duties, exchange of gas cylinders (involves moderate lifting)Work in a safe manner in accordance with Laboratory Health and Safety policies and proceduresProcessing specimens, sub culturing of specimens, cleaning and maintenance of equipment, assisting BMS staff in analytical techniques, and use of automated equipment within Containment Level 3 laboratoryUse of automated equipment and its cleaning and maintenance within Containment Level 2 laboratories�To participate in Quality Assurance and Quality Control activities and assist the department in maintaining UKAS accreditationTo participate in audit processes, drug trials, research projects as required�Assisting in the production of bacteriological culture mediaJob Holder is expected to occasionally work under remote supervision of a Registered Biomedical Scientist following defined SOP/protocols and would be expected to refer non routine issues to their supervisor
