**Job summary**:
**About SOLS**:
Across Solicitor's Office and Legal Services (SOLS) we provide legal services to the whole of HMRC. This includes:

- The conduct of independent reviews of decisions made by HMRC which are requested by customers under the legislative provisions.
- The conduct of tribunal and civil litigation on a full range of services.
- Work on new legislation.
- Drafting of statutory instruments and other legal documents.
- Legal advice to ExCom and staff.

We also provide technical accountancy and forensic services to HMRC, are head of the Compliance Accountants’ and Insolvency Professions as well as handling Ministerial Correspondence and Freedom of Information requests for HMRC.

**This Team Specifically deals with**:
The work is both high volume and high paced and the post holder will be required to drive forward improvements in the quality of reviews working collaboratively with a range of key stakeholders both within and outside SOLS.

This is a Tax Professional role and applicants will need to successfully complete a structured learning course and assessments for posts to be made substantive.

**Job description**:

- Reviewing appealable decisions to ensure they are suitable for litigation in accordance with the Litigation and Settlements Strategy
- Preparing clear recommendations for countersigning, using a structured review template, setting out points of issue
- Liaising with customers by phone and written communication to ensure a clear understanding of their arguments before reaching a conclusion
- Preparation of comprehensive letters to a high standard setting out all relevant law and review conclusions based on a range of regimes, liability decisions and associated penalties
- Liaising with key stakeholders to ensure decisions are defended in accordance with HMRC policy and tax law. Addressing all relevant arguments, evidence, case law (Identifying what statue and case law is applicable), costs and consideration of Alternative Dispute Resolution
- Accurate and timely maintenance of Case Management Systems, ensuring all customer data is effectively safeguarded in accordance with GDPR
- Working closely with colleagues and management locally and nationally to meet performance standards, key targets, and help improve our processes, sometimes through participation in project work
- Manage individual caseload to meet statutory deadlines
- Review Officers provide technical advice and assistance to customers and colleagues, supporting the delivery of Strategic Objectives
- Review Officer will be expected to develop a high level of knowledge, skills and understanding and work as part of an integrated customer-facing team but may also be asked to support colleagues in other parts of Reviews & Litigation and the wider HMRC

We are looking for:

- Good team working skills and be able to adopt a flexible approach to help achieve business results, which include statutory targets
- Good time management and planning skills to manage your portfolio of work with the minimum of supervision to meet tight timescales/pre-set deadlines
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience of using, analysing and interpreting complex information to make informed decisions, presenting them in a persuasive manner
