The Role

The School of Modern Languages, Newcastle University, is delighted to advertise this exciting opportunity for a people orientated individual to join us as a School Research Co-ordinator. The post holder will work alongside the School Manager, Head of School, Director of Research, and the Director of Impact and Engagement to help to implement strategies, objectives and plans in order to respond to the agendas of the School, Faculty and University, You will have strong leadership skills, be a team player and be comfortable working in a matrix structure. You will be a proactive problem solver, with the ability to negotiate with and influence colleagues.

Key Accountabilities
To work closely with the Head of School, Director of Research, Director of Impact and Engagement, as well as the School Manager to identify, develop and implement a strategic plan and aims for the unit aligning with overarching Faculty aims.
To identify and implement mechanisms that support a thriving, inclusive and supportive research and scholarship culture and environment for all colleagues and job families.
Overarching contact for all research related matters across the unit.
To Manage and provide agile and visible support for all research funding proposals across the unit, providing sound advice and guidance relating to all areas of costing bids.
To ensure knowledge and expertise in providing appropriate advice and signposting colleagues to relevant support
To work alongside the Directors and School Manager in establishing, maintaining, and reviewing administrative systems and procedures designed to assist with strategic research goals. This includes overseeing the implementation of schemes for maximising academic research time for academic staff as well as the systematic monitoring of relevant research outputs/metrics to assist the preparation of the School’s Research Excellence Framework (REF) returns to UoA26, Modern Languages and Linguistics, which comprises of three schools - Modern Languages, ECLS, and SELLLS (linguistics) and necessitates liaising with relevant staff from these units
To work with the Directors, School Manager and Faculty to develop and implement the School’s REF strategy. To understand and disseminate guidance and support the implementation of internal and external quality assessments. Leading in the unit to ensure that systems, processes, and data collection are in place in a timely manner to ensure School-readiness for future exercises
To identify appropriate external funding opportunities and disseminate these amongst academic, research and professional support staff. To develop an awareness of research, engagement and impact activities and interests in order to promote and suggest ways to improve research and engagement collaboration both within and out of the School
To work with colleagues across other Schools, in particular with colleagues in their research clusters, to ensure that opportunities to enhance and create a consistent approach to research support are optimised
To oversee the School’s research budgets and Personal Individual Research Accounts, the financial management of all research grants, including the monitoring of expenditure and overheads
To be an active member of the School’s Research Committee, advising the Chair on agenda items and paperwork as appropriate
Accessing, analysing and providing reports on research data for the monitoring of research performance to the School Research Committee and School Executive Board through. regular reports
To actively network with other Research Co-ordinators/Managers both internally and externally. This includes working closely with colleagues from Faculty Finance, Research Funding Development, Project Managers, Grants and Contracts, Contract Finance Management and Business Development & Enterprise Teams to ensure an efficient and effective research support is available to researchers
To be responsible for the research administration induction for all research colleagues within the school
