**Job summary**:
We are the communications team for the British Army. Working alongside our colleagues in the Ministry of Defence, our communications covers everything from military activity overseas to the annual Trooping the Colour in London.

Our communications team are members of the Government Communications Service (GCS), who are our professional body. We communicate based on insight and objectives. Our website and social media channels are at the heart of our team and are a key way for us to communicate to our audiences.

The Head of Digital and Content reports to the Deputy Head of Strategic Communications.

Your role will be to lead all aspects of digital communications and content creation. You will be the line manager of 2 members of staff, and lead a team of social media managers, content creators and designers.

The main aspects of this role are:

- develop and implement the digital communications strategy
- working with our digital agency, own and develop our website
- lead your team to create innovative and creative content including video, imagery or graphic design products
- embed best practice across army communications and the wider British Army
- find creative approaches to achieve communications objectives
- be a champion for digital communication across the army
- build a network of digital expertise across our channels.

Although all technical aspects of our public-facing website are handled by our digital agency, you will be ensuring it is up-to-date, modern and serves our audiences.

You will need to do all this whilst ensuring your team delivers against existing work requirements, communications priorities and provide advice and reassurance when required.

**Job description**:
**Strategy (20%)**
- Be the advocate for digital engagement and social media in Army communications.
- Ensure the Army meets MOD and Government-wide policy and best practice (e.g. GDS’s Digital by Default Standard for Digital projects).
- Attend the cross-government ‘Digital Centre of Expertise’ meetings, sharing best practice with GCS digital colleagues and collaborating on cross-government objectives, including the implementation of the MCOM 2.0 (modern communications) model.
- Work with the Army campaigns team on developing innovative digital initiatives to campaign delivery
- Identify implications of Army and Defence communications goals and ensure digital services are designed to meet user needs.
- Identify practical issues and risks in Army digital communications and develop mitigation actions and monitor them on an ongoing basis.

**Channels (25%)**
- Manage the redesign and upgrade of the existing British Army corporate website, working alongside our digital agency.
- Oversee the management and governance of digital channels including new and existing official social media presences.
- Provide digital best practice advice to Army Communications, from strategy formation through to campaign delivery, capitalising on Army earned and owned channels and platforms
- Champion on-going development and best use of earned and owned digital communications channels.
- Support Army communications efforts in audience development and management, nationally and internationally.
- Oversee provision of digital content plans to the Campaign management teams.
- Lead in the innovation and creation of digital products and experiences.
- Ensure tight integration of user research, information architecture, brand, channels and platform integration to deliver on agreed defence communications objectives.

**Content Creation (25%)**
- Oversee the production and roll out of high impact creative content for high priority campaigns
- Advise on content ideas and execution, including storytelling and narrative development
- Lead on innovation of new content types and approaches
- Encourage new and creative ways of getting our messages and content out to our audiences

**Technology and Data (10%)**
- Keep pace with developments on the digital landscape and emerging trends.
- Advise and advocate use of digital analytics / diagnostics.
- Implement the tools and practices for the monitoring of, listening and responding to feedback from MOD business users of digital products and services.
- Support and advise on metrics, digital assessment criteria, evaluation methodologies and tools (working with the Assistant Head - Research, Insight & Evaluation).
