Role
The Student Welfare Division sits within a large directorate, Student and Academic Services, which provides a wide range of services to DMU students. This role will see the post holder working both within the division and across the whole university.
Working as part of the Mental Health Inclusion Team and closely with colleagues from related areas including Wellbeing and Disability Advice and Support you will be involved in a range of activities aimed at promoting the retention and attainment of students. This will include liaising with faculties within DMU to monitor students who may be at risk of leaving the university.

You will be responsible for managing the appropriate intervention of those students who may be at risk. You will assess and decide the relevant course of action for students that are identified within the students at risk group. This may involve direct intervention or liaising with colleagues to establish appropriate action.

Making effective use of supervision, you will carry a small student caseload, and contribute to the Student Welfare Single Point of Access (SPA). This will involve assessing and managing student needs, including risk and making referrals to services within the university or external agencies as appropriate

The role will start ASAP with a current ongoing assignment.

Duties and responsibilities
- Coordinate a response to students that are identified as 'at risk' or 'vulnerable'. Follow up any concerns about a student's wellbeing that have arisen from an incident or series of enquiries from staff or students; help to co-ordinate the University's response, contact the individual student and facilitate a referral to further appropriate support; provide confidential feedback to referrers.
- Develop and maintain processes that are designed to refer and signpost students to the appropriate areas of support.
- Maintaining accurate and confidential records of student interactions and
interventions in accordance with data protection and local policy.
- Creating databases and reviewing data in relation to students at risk of leaving the
university.
- Liaise with Mental Health and Student and Academic Support teams to ensure
contact maintained with students who are temporarily absent (Leave of Absence,
Suspension on Health Grounds etc)., but not actually registered with the service.
- Establish links with the university security team and campus police officer.
- Providing high quality one to one support/intervention for students aimed at building
resilience and coping strategies, tailored to the demands of their studies.
- Ensuring timely assessment of student's needs, and implementation of culturally
appropriate support packages, which aid student retention and academic
progression.
- Assessing and managing risk relating to students who are in contact with the
student support services, and contributing to efforts of the wider division to reduce
risk in the student population more generally.
- Working collaboratively with colleagues across the university, including: Student
and Academic Support services, Security, campus police officer, Faculty staff.
- Develop and maintain systems which ensure the monitoring and evaluation of the
impact of initiatives and interventions. Ability to provide progress and evaluation
reports as requested.

- Perform any other duties commensurate with the job grade as reasonably required
from time to time.

Skills and experience
An HCPC, Social Work England or
NMC registered professional with a
qualification in an area such as Social
Work, Occupational Therapy or Mental
Health Nursing

Experience of working in mental health

Experience of coordinating and
delivering direct support to individuals
with health and wellbeing needs,
including mental health difficulties
